Im considering using some cfl's for side lighting, is it alrite to just put them in a desk lamp with the bendable "neck" to point it where I want to, or are there better options??

This is not a bad idea at all if that is what works for you, it will certainly be effective. If you are using a grow box you should look into the side mounted T5 cfl's (long skinny ones). They work great too I've heard.

Check it out... http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.bikudo.com/photo_stock/370406.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.bikudo.com/buy/details/443338/t5_batten_fitting.html&usg=__ByHtGUqQvQ-lkPrZwUPEgLHiZBE=&h=300&w=297&sz=32&hl=en&start=13&um=1&tbnid=pgLzjyJ5UZYnYM:&tbnh=116&tbnw=115&prev=/images?q=cfl+t5+light&hl=en&client=safari&rls=en-us&sa=G&um=1

If you are in flower mode you will want to be using the 42W 150 equivalent and if you are still in veg mode, go with the 23W 100 equivalent. Both in daylight color.

Good luck.

That's actually what I've done I'm using three flexi style lamps to provide more direct light to some of the lower bud sites on my plant.
So far it seems to be working the bud sites are coming along as well as the cola so far.
