Overview
This model is currently on Amazon as the following products:
Hollandstar COB x5 - 120$
CRXSunny x5 - 120$
Mastergrow x5 - 200$
Bestva x5 - 200$
Many of the x3-6 units use the same bizarre COB, using the same model COB chip two vendors have listed completely conflicting spectrum information.
In any event, this is 'moderate' in blue and very heavy in red; it should probably be used for flower although I'm been using it for Veg and actually getting pretty good results.
It is an extremely penetrating light-source and being in the same room as it seems like it may have the potential to cause damage to vision, however this may just be a result of the spectrum and not indicative of the actual output.
The durability of this product is really not too hot, the heat-sinks appear to have severe damage caused by a high operating temperature, after less than 2 months of use.
At 100$ I guess the case and drivers are justified though.
You must have good ventilation and by good I mean excellent because this thing puts off sun-like heat, especially in the summer.
The specs for COB-NL-S5 state that it has at 5 feet, 1,400 PAR and can cover 6x6 which seems very unlikely however I've spec'd my own setup the same way and find it may be true. (The effective range, not the PAR output)
Even 3 feet from canopy top seems to reduce stretch by a lot and results in very tight growth between nodes, I would suggest the ideal operating distance for a non-dimmable COB-NL-SX unit to be circa 4 feet from the top of the canopy during veg if you're trying to promote stretch.
For this reason, LST is a very good idea and manipulating the shape of the plant is really a must for efficiency reasons and also to stay within the operating distance of this light in a closed space.
The fact that this exists makes me unsure of why people are buying Viparspectra or MarsHydro in general.
This is really not a suitable replacement for Vero or any of the other 'true cob' variants, as this is clearly not the same.
But definitely it's stronger than the other 3-5W lights you can find.
Pictures and other notes pending...
