Co2 usage - vinegar & baking soda

Hey tokers
So do any of you experiment with Co2 via vinegar & baking soda compounds? I mix it in a plastic jug and open the lid for a few minutes at a time to let Co2 escape; it is very beneficial, but I've recently made the mistake of introducing Co2 too soon and killed one of my plants.
Does anyone have a good rule-of-thumb as to what age Co2 becomes appropriate?

It's to my understanding that what your doing is very inefficient. You would have to open it over and over and over to get any real effect. Which would be immediately counteracted when you open the door to leave your room.

Also, I think you killed your plant some other way. Wouldn't happen from your method of "adding" co2.
