'clone only' strains

why are certain strains like original uk cheese 'clone only'?

couldnt they be stressed into hermie then self pollenate? just curious...

because if it is clone only then it is that much harder to aqquire....not everybody likes sharing their personal strains.....they think if they give it to someone then everyone will have it.....I got g.d.p. from someone in oaktown along with LA confidential,afgooey,and green crack......and i live in wash..that just goes to show you a little bit of how far stuff actually spreads out....

aye i can understand that but say if i wanted to sell genuine uk cheese seeds, which would be insanely popular, all i'd need to do is track down one clone (which lets face it wouldnt be that hard) self polenate then rake in the cash on selling seeds.

i find it very surprising that nobodies done this before.

I think if it was that easy it would have been done a looong time ago..

exactly, so whats stopping it? is it impossible to hermie or something?

Because the seeds made will likely not resemble the desired cultivar. Clone only strains are either renamed from a purchased batch of seeds, or the result of some level of hybridization or inbreeding. Sometimes someone cracks some beans and finds the ultimate keeper, which has so many desirable traits it gets singled out for propagation and eventualy renamed and passed on. Other times a male of one type is crossed with an unrelated mother and an amazing seed or two are made that shine. A name is thought up and yada yada. Yet again a specific breeding project is undertook and produces magic. Greed or fear makes said breeder horde the seeds and some clones are leaked or handed out. And many other scenarios.

Yet few of these roads will lead to a female, that when feminized and used to pollinate itself, will result in seeds that will earn anything but ire and bad rep from those who pay for "true UK cheese".
