Clay in the soil

Hey, I just recently planted a couple babies outside. I brought in 120 pounds of top soil and dug the plots out of the ground. I used some existing soil and mixed it into the top soil. The soil where I planted as a lot of clay in it. What are the advantages/disadvantages of clay in the soil?

Gumbo wouldn't be considered 'clay' too would it? It's certainly not red but Grey and stinky. It retains water. Would the same be true for this gumbo reading as it is for clay? I'm Carolina East Coast and it is abundant here. I chose not to use one spot because I hit clay about 1' from the surface.
