Cheezeburgalars Seed Experience.

A little about me.
I've only been growing a little over 2 years, but in that time I've gone threw about 110 seeds. Most of them were random freebies from friends/family. All indoor. I follow a simple, Light - Air - Water, approach to growing. Seeds are just as an important factor to growing. Since knowing what your growing is half the fun! I like to mix it up and search for a great strain or specific plant, but also I'm on a never ending search for a 10/10 to clone repeatedly. I grow as a hobby because it's relaxing and stress relieving(much like the plant itself), and also because It's much cheaper to grow my own medicine than buy it from a club.

Reasons for posting.
To help the new/er people save money, headaches, and get the best experience from growing you can! I'm sure this post will help dozens if not hundreds of new growers choose their seeds wisely!

The different kinds of seeds I've grown and the experiences I've had with them.
Random Afghan/Mexican seeds that were free.

Why I grew them? - They were free and I had nothing else and was on a budget. Mind you I cannot be 100% sure what exactly these were or crossed with what.

The experience? - Solid plant growth, fairly forgiving. I kind of manhandled them and they produced well. BUT on my first grow of 34 plants exactly half(17) hermied. I was on the ball and caught them early.

Lemon Skunk that was free.

Why I grew them?- Again, they were free and I was on a budget. I also had no other seeds or clones available.

The experience? - WONDERFUL! I received about 10 lemons in a pack of 50 seeds from a friend. The friend said the lemon seeds were sensi seeds. The rest were Afghan/Mexican seeds, so it was very easy to tell which ones were lemon at the middle/end of flowering. They were all beautiful mid sized plants with gorgeous sparkly lemon scented buds. Best of all NO hermies on any of the 50 seeds this time! +1 for the random afghan/mexican seeds! I wasn't into cloning yet and really regreted not getting any.

Purple Kush(PK) AND Super Lemon Haze(SLH).

Why I grew them? - I had money this time! Yay! So I splurged on 2 10 packs from greenhouse seeds. I received 4 random seeds with my order which I didn't pay too much attention to which kind was which. Oh yeah, why I grew them, I wanted to try the 2 time cup winner and I wanted something purple with a solid all around grow/smoke rep. I was in the search for a quality plant to start cloning.

The experience? - Pretty good. Again, as with my previous seeds, all sprouted. I then vegged them and cloned them. Then bloomed them, all were female. Most of the PK had color, 2-3 didn't have much or any. 2 of the lemons turned out to be gimps. All the PKs ended up being pretty solid plants, producing pretty evenly with each other except 1 that had softball nugs that were beautiful except for it had no purple on the nugs themselves, only a little on the leaves, and also it produced considerably less than the others.

Of the 8 SLHs that were not gimps. 7 were very mediocre looking. Yielded ok, looked ok, smoked very nice though. BUT the 1 remaining SLH was the show stopper of the room(which I will refer to as #7 from here on), which out produced every other plant considerably and the look was 5 star. That plant got its own 2 jars. The smoke also was a 5 star experience. It was like out of a magazine, it was one of those plants that everyone says "the best weed ever". I had found the one I would re-clone indefinitely.

Any how let me talk a little about the 4 random seeds, 2 of them were bubblegum crosses that turned out extremely well, sadly I was too focused on the PK and SLH to take clones from them. The other 2 I dubbed "spanish" were both solid plants, but lacked anything special about them. No special color or distinct smell. So lesson learned, clone your free seeds, they might turn out to be better than the ones you paid $100 for!

Back to the experience! I slapped in all the clones into the bloom room except the 3 clones I made from my #7. I then proceeded to clone more #7, filled up my veg room with them. Then the unthinkable happened about 2 weeks after I potted my clones. They got the mosaic virus. It spread to every plant before I knew what the problem was exactly, since I've had spider mites/fungas nats before, I thought it was a case of bugs even though I couldn't see them. But one plant(i called her "the infector) died off of complete necrosis. Right before the infector died, I found out what I had from researching online and comparing pics of the virus and all the symptoms lined up. I used the same razor blade to top my veg room and that's how it hit every plant. But no idea how it got in there in the first place! So lesson there is to always keep your room(s) and equipment clean and sterile as possible, Including your shoes!

My advice to you!
Would I recommend Free seeds? - Yes, of course!

If your given free seeds and have no other options. Or given seeds and you have free space. Grow em and keep a close eye on them.

Would I recommend buying a strain that goes back more than 5-10-20 years? - Definitely!!! This is your best bet!

If you have money and you plan to buy seeds. Do yourself a favor and buy some older/established genetics from a reputable dealer. There are so many amazing strains with great reps. Your chances of having a bountiful successful grow will be much higher. I highly recommend picking up Lemon Skunk from a reputable dealer over at attitude seeds. Which is where I buy my seeds from.

Would I recommend SLH or an exotic seed? - Not so much. Only if you are dead set on it, please buy one with at least half known genetics of an established older strain if you want semi reliable results.
If you plan to buy "exotic seeds" such as SLH or "Acid" or "Vertigo", do as much research on their genetics as you can to get an idea of what your dealing with, look for grow journals and unless it's crossed with some kind of stable well established strain I wouldn't recommend buying it. If your dead set on an exotic seed please do yourself a favor and make sure it's crossed with white widow or super bud or one of the tried and true strains.

Final thoughts.
Since I'm back in the market for seeds and I have money! I've ordered 5 packs of super bud/white widow/buba kush/slh. Now 3 of these strains I have high hopes for consistency. The SLH I kind of regret reordering, because I feel the #7 was a 1 in 100 kind of plant. So I'm rolling the dice with my money on those 5 seeds. I also splurged on Tangerine Dream (yes again buying into the cannabis cup winner hype) and dutch passion blueberry. I would have ordered DJ short since the reviews are out of this world for his strain, but it was sold out and I read that dutch passion is just as good(as in 2nd best). I've also received 10-14 free seeds from all the orders I've placed threw attitude seeds. So I'll be sure to clone the free strains this time around in case one catches my eye(or nose).

*** Also if you read nothing else, Please read this part for my "Buddha like" insight, seed strains are a lot like cars. There are the older more established models, tried and true, great reliability and performance. Then there's these new "cutting edge" ones that you really have to get an ample number of seeds to get 1-2 good plants that are worth cloning/seeding.So if your new to buying seeds please buy the older more reliable strains to start your growing experience! ***
