hi all,iv have a nice cfl grow set up and have done a few grows with it ,with happy results.but im thinking of changing to one 250watt dual spec hps. i know with the 400watters ,you have to keep them 18inchs from the plant..will this rule go for a 250watt? also will i see much of a differance with the one 250watt over the cfls? thank for input:leaf:

I run a 400w hps for flowering, and dont keep it 18" from the top... I use the old hand under the light test... on average mine is floating about 12-14" above the plants with no ill effects.

I would say a 250w would be just slightly cooler than a 400w

When your light is burning, put your hand underneath it where your plant canopy will be, If it is very hot you need to raise it. You want to get that light as close as possible to your plant canopy without burning your plants. If you have a thermometer you can hang it from your light to see what the temp is, but the hand method will work fine. Anything over 80 is pushing it. you will most definitley see a difference in production using the hps over cfls. Good luck to you and Respect!

I have no experience using CFL but everything I have ever read or seen, there is a huge difference in yield from just about anything to HPS for flowering.

there will be a difference, but it won't be significant with just one 250w burning all day. when you get up to multiple 1000 watt lights the difference becomes noticeable, but it's always worth it!
