Carbon Screen Air Filter

Ok, I was thinking of doing something with the back of a grow box to act as a heat exchanger (aluminum) to avoid requiring a venting fan that would break down.

I have another idea - I'm toying with the idea instead of making a sort of narrow box using aluminum screen (think like a screen door and that air space in between it being filled with carbon) that's the size of the back facing panel of a grow box, about 2 inches thick, filled with activated carbon. The rest of the box would be airtight, so this would be the only way for air to get in and out of the box, through the back panel on the grow box which is in effect a giant carbon filter.

I figure it would act as a passive air AND heat exchanger, and help avoid smell issues at the same time, - all with nothing to break down.

Any thoughts? Does anyone know the contact time with air that typical carbon scrubbers have? I'm assuming it is low contact time, and the air is forced through by a fan. And that with this method the contact time between air and carbon would be alot longer? Anyone have similar experiences?
