Carbon Filtration Smell

Hey all,

Thanks to your tips previously. I have finally got my 1st Auto off and running. A few issues along the way. First failed due to damping off. This one struggled with multiple feeds in coco to start but seems to prefer singular daily feeds, so I am sticking with what seems to be working for me and now she is in her first week of Flower.

I've been having issues with the sweet exhaust smell from the start. I can't exhaust out any windows unfortunately, being in a ground floor apartment with heavy traffic, so I'm exhausting towards a cracked open window. Managing to maintain temps and RH though. I have this sweet smell that is always in the air. I have heard that's the smell of the carbon itself which is a shame as it's pretty potent itself and I am worried that this will or is already being noticed. I am reluctant to use dryer sheets in the exhaust or ONA as I read that will drastically change the taste of the bud. I am trying to be as stealthy as possible regarding the smell. I am currently using a Rhino Pro. Are there any decent filters that don't pump out this sweet smell or do all carbon filters smell like candy when in use?

All advice is appreciated.

I can't help at all, but I definitely wouldn't put anything in the exhaust to cover the smell. I have never had a sweet smell from my carbon filters. Well, not until one gave up the ghost and the blueberry cupcake smell filled my whole house. Lol. I have used vivosun, ac infinity, and some knockoff cheapie filters and never experienced the smells you are describing. Would it work to add a couple glade plug-ins in the house or something that would compliment the smell you are getting. That way if anybody asks, you can just say that's what it is.

I've never smelt a sweet smell from my filters and I've used rhino Pro for a long time.

What ducting are you using?

Only thing I can suggest is adding an additional inline filter, if your extraction can manage it.

I've noticed a smell from my carbon filters. Sweet, not really. More like... fresh, and it's not overwhelming.

Op, are you pulling the air through the filter, or pushing it through?

Hi.

I have already added a smaller 4inch fox filter on the end hoping it doesn't over-tax the fan. There is a sweet smell from now 2 Carbon filtration devices. I read most New Carbon filters have a sweet smell. Carbon itself has it's own smell?

I'm using Combi Ducting. Pulling air through filter and pushing out a small one on end now.

I am burning essential oils atm which is helping. I do have another Rhino Pro to try too. I was going to order a back-up fan, so I'll test out just those 2 components and see if there is a sweet smell outside of a grow.

I have ordered another fan to test out a new Rhino pro Filter outside of a grow. Will check the exhaust smell. I was made aware that New Carbon Filters can have a strong sweet smell of their own. As I am not able to exhaust out a window it is building up and creeping out my flat. Turning out to be expensive. But better safe than sorry with stealth.

No holes. All is sealed and is inside the grow tent exhausting out via duct. The Exhaust is what smells very sweet.

Any recommended filters? If the next rhino-pro has the same smell and you are saying you don't with yours - which ones are you currently using please?

Currently using
RVK 42
Rhino Pro 4".
(Added A small 4" fox filter on end of duct too)

Many Thanks

Can you post a link or picture , goole image or whatever of this combination ducting?

Edit, I've already googled it.

Just wondering if it's the vinyl coating that you can smell

I'll test my next Rhino with fan and no duct. I don't think it's the ducting. I am aware that Carbon has a sweet smell itself. Just this one is pretty strong or I am overly sensitive to it. Will get to the bottom of it. Thank-you.

I've had this same smell from filters as they get old. I would look into can-lite brand or some of the higher tier filters. i had problems with AC Infinity carbon filter smelling like this after only a couple months.. You could put some ONA gel downstream of the exhaust, this will prevent the chemicals from making their way onto your weed. ONA same as lots of air fresheners like febreeze have a chemical that binds to terpenes (odors) and neutralizes them. The chemicals also have whatever smell they designed it to have, apple crisp whatever. So your weed will not only taste but smell like perfume if you put it within the same airspace as your plants.

I remember when Ona got really popular a few years ago and weed going around in my area was "perfumey" people would complain about it and I explained to them that it's because it is literally covered in perfume....... it was so bad our grow shops even put warning signs up on the ona buckets.

I have read that about ONA, reason I am reluctant to use it, I am exhausting into the same room as the grow tent. As for the Carbon smell, I read new carbon smells sweet and when the sweetness goes it is no longer as active. So much conflicting information about. I am going to test 2 new parts myself.. Another Fan/Filter combo and see if that pumps out a sweet smell outside of a grow environment. I think most people exhaust out a window etc so they wouldn't notice any smells building up in their homes. Exhausting into the room, you notice a buildup of sweetness. This one sickly sweet to my nose. I am cracking a window open but can't have passersby notice it.

I'll get it sorted one way or another. Just the exspence and this is my first run and only 1 Auto.

Just a heads up. Tried 3 new Carbon filters. Fox. Carbo Air. Rhino Pro. Without duct. All give off a sweet smell. Rhino pro moreso. Conclusive - Carbon does have and give off a sweet smell if its own regardless of being in a grow. Exhausting indoors in small room will have this build up of course. I must be sensitive to it. So using aromatherapy oils to blend with it. My living room smells like Lemon Drizzle cake. Neighbours will think I bake a-lot At least I have spare parts now too lol.

Honestly the sweet smell wouldn't be so bad.. I would just put a little can of the ona linen smell in your vent so it just smells like fresh laundry all the time lmao. As long as the ona is being constantly blown outside, then it shouldn't be able to effect your room or plants.

If your in a illegal state just know that obvious ventilation out of windows with lots of odor masking, incense etc is a red flag to pigs and thieves alike.

Thats the reason I am exhausting indoors and the sickly carbon sweet smell was building up. I have it sorted now. I am using Lemon essential oil over filter floss on exhaust. Smells like lemon drizzle cake here. My strain has citrus notes, so if it picks up the lemon from the rooms air then all good. Should blend well. lmao.
