Can You Make Your Own Filters?

I have always been a do-it-yourself type of person so I am trying to make effective use of some space in my grow room by implementing home-made carbon filters. I read recently where this was done with a 5 gallon bucket and 25 pounds of carbon. Looking for some advise on carbon filters.

Room is 32"L x 41"W x 60"H
4-6 plants to start

I'm Trying to place the filter elements at the ceiling (just outside the room) to get it off the floor and have two permanent boxes about 14"x14"x5" that I can build them into. I was planning on making a system using heppa filter material over large holes cut out and use active carbon to fill the box. With 2 small fans and dual 4" ductwork I was planning on sucking the air out of the room and forcing it through the filters and then into open space. Anyone know if this will be enough to get the smell 100% gone or seem like more trouble than it's worth? Also, has anyone experimented with charcoal (not the kind for your grill) or carbon furnace filters? Any advice is much appreciated.

I once made a filter like this:
-Cut a 6" diameter pvc pipe into 3. 4" sections
-Get activated carbon from a pet store and coffee filters
-Put some activated carbon between two coffee filters and put between the sections of pipe.
-get two computer fans and put them on the ends, one blowing in and one blowing out, to create air flow in one direction through the filter.
-Power the fans by one dc adapter, I used one that was a remoter control car charger.

-don't put too much carbon in there or the fans will have trouble pushing air
-when you attach the coffee filters to the pvc, pull the filters tight so that the carbon is stationary and does not settle in one spot
-I imagine that if you used the wrong size adapter for the fans the whole thing would get hot, but I had no problems

The easiest way to make a carbon filter is out of a five gallon bucket. Drill holes in bottom. Put cut out hepa filter material in bottom. fill up with activated charcoal from pet store. Plum ducting into lid. Done... Easy as pie

This is the one I made and it works pretty good. I have a 30"L x 30"W x 48"H grow box with this installed. I am sure it can be made bigger if need be. But it works pretty good for a small grow box like mine or even yours which is alittle bit bigger in size.

Thanks for the advice. The link from M4A1 (nice username) has a pretty nice and almost too easy set up that would work great and easily for anyone not willing to cough up the coin for pro-style filter systems.
