Can I switch out a 250 watt bulb and a 400 watt bulb in the same air cooled hood?

I was wondering if a got an air cooled hood if i could initially put in a 400 watt hps and then if i found that it was too hot or something if i could switch the bulb out and put in a 250 watt hps in the same system. Thanks.

You would need to change the ballast also...and halve the area you're growing in/number of plants you're growing...

You can also use a switchable ballast. I have one it lets you select from a range between 250 and 400+ watts. Just make sure the switch is matched with the bulb strength. and as far as halving your number of plants.. that isn't true. the difference in lighting between a 250 and a 400watt is about 1 sqft. a 250 watt will do well in a 2x2 area while a 400 watt will do well in a 3x3 area. Plants will compete more for light with the lower wattage but it shouldn't be a problem.
