So I've purchased a fan for my carbon filter that I'll be using. But I had no idea how powerfull this thing was and its way too noisy. The hydro shop says they have a controller you plug it into to adjust the speed but their asking almost 50$ for it and I'm not ready to pay that. I've heard about installing a dimmer swich to the motor but not sure how to do this or if its safe. I would like to cut the speed of the fan at least half way or even change the rpm of the fan. Here are the specs of the fan with pics. Help is much appreciated! Thanks

4inch Typhoon inline duct fan (vent 100)
176 cfm
120volts - 60hz - 98watts
2500Rpm
DB(noise) 46

im not sure about contollers/dimmers could you make a box to place the fan in with some insulation to make it quieter if you use google or even search rollitup you should find a diy box

most dimmer switches are not meant to be used by an inline fan. it will prematurely burn out the motor. i'm sitting in the same boat as you.

wouldnt think so not as if the fan gets hot and if something needs doing to the fan its only expanding foam can be cut with a knife

I'm no doubt gonna get flamed for this ... But hey..I'm just giving my opinion based on what i know .

I use a box standard dimmer switch to control my fan ... And most if not all the people i know that grow ... Also use them .

No one has ever had a fan burn out ...They run nice and quiet ( with a very slight hummm )
I'm not saying its the right thing to use ... But what i will say is ... they work and are cheap ... It will give you time to get the money together to get a more expensive controller later down the road .

Thanks for all the replies! I'm kinda leaning towards wanting to lower the speed because I know that will reduce the noise. But also I'm growing in a walk in closet (4feet wide, 8feet long and 8feet high) this fan is so powerfull I don't even think its necessary to have it this high. It makes it seems like the air will be moving through the carbon filter so fast it won't be able to scrub the smell. I was hoping there was a way to mess with the wires cause there is a box on the side that opens up. But I guess I'll have no choice but to wait and buy a speed controller. Even building a box for it won't muffle the noise much because the air blowing out is so powerfull it part of the problem

i have a pretty powerful blower for my exhaust purposes connected to the carbon filter inside the cabinet as well.
my blower has a spot under the "hood" that, if i look closely it says "1" and "2" for the two speeds it offers... and yes i can switch the blue wire from slot 1 to 2 and it goes faster. so i would say, take a look under your hood
good luck

I've got a couple pictures but won't let me upload them.... My local hydro store sells the speed control and some type of dimmer swich to wire up, so I'm gona stop by in a week or so and see for myself. Hopefully it works out fine. While I'm hear I'm sealing the front of the closet door(the entire inside is walls) I bought some material from the hydro store a while ago. One side is black and the other is white. What I'm trying to figure out atm is how can I seal this off and still be able to get into the closet? Lol I'm thinking velcrow tape? If that's how you spell it. But will that keep it sealed and not let smell through?

if the carbon filter is installed and used properly you shouldnt have any major odor problems.
keep in mind while flowering the smell gets STRONG and especially during the dark hours... dont ask me why but im sure someone on RIU could answer that
personally i have my exhaust (hooked up to the filter) running 15 min out of every hour during the dark hours to keep the air circulating and the dank smell from sitting in there!
