Can anyone afford to buy?

If I can't secure a way to pay for this, I will have to opt out of the program. Given the size of my prescription, that's looking more and more likely.

I suggest you wait and see what LPs have to offer. I know people are afraid of the unknown, but rest assured there will be LP's who actually care about their patients. I think you will see prices settle to $3-$5 a gram once the smoke clears, and offer many high quality strains. There is already one LP offering 12 strains at $6 a gram. I think that is a reasonable price for high quality meds. Wait and see, with over 200 LP applications I'm sure several of them will interest you. It's not all doom and gloom.

It's all about market share. 1000 patients at $6 a gram or 5000 patients at $3 a gram, what makes more spence as a business plan?

You dont have to be able to afford it. There will be a court ordered injunction almost certainly. Supreme Court rulings are binding and in 2001 the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that any person(s) that had the need for Cannabis for medicinal purposes as prescribed by a physician MUST HAVE REASONABLE ACCESS to medicinal cannabis. Telling you to either buy for 6-15$/gram or switch medications is NOT reasonable access too cannabis. I'm not even really sure why the conservatives are trying to push through an unconstitutional set of rules that are in direct violation of a Supreme Court ruling. They love to piss all over rights and freedoms, but thankfully the charter and the courts will protect our rights.

What is the definition of "Reasonable access?" Is "reasonable" defined as accessing it with a mouse click? Or being able to get it at $1/gram?

The government will be looking at their own bottom line of tax revenues from this. So you can almost plan that "reasonable" will be redefined by the courts.

Maybe some LPs will offer discounts to patients that buy bulk volumes.

I'm assuming you were joking about the bulk discount?

I'm with you Brian Savage
A large majority of those who will reply to the contrary, are already making plans to empty our wallets of cash,
with their new way of life/business.
We all know fully well that ,they will argue any point the reasonable (sick people) make, for wanting complete access to their medications.

Its not for them (LP's and government) to decide what is" reasonable access" but rather the decision is for sick people, to decide what is reasonable access,
based on what eases the burden of being sick the most.
This is a right that those who fought this in court the first time around, won, and just because the conservatives want to change things, they
think its okay to stomp on the rights of the sick and dying.
Well guess what its not okay.....and its especially not okay to do so at the expense of those who were already put thru the mental anguish of fighting
the government the first time around.(lest we forget these were sick people robbed of their time and money, when really they just needed some compassion)
Shame on the greedy

We sure hope that Brian is right about our protections and that patients will continue to be able grow for themselves.

With that said, I don't see how the government is being greedy as it taxes this business the same as any other, or how new LPs are deciding anything, much less "reasonable access". Patients will choose you watch, they will choose shopping in their underwear all across Canada instead of dealing with a probable criminal for unknown weed. We get that the rules are changing again and this is catching most off guard including us. Hard to argue that the MMAR was working either though.

On the positive side the next generation will have access to a huge selection of very high quality, tested marihuana at much reduced prices. Give Producers a few years to get on their feet and expand their operations and the price will come down making it more expensive for you to grow it yourself. Unlike us many are too sick to grow it themselves now and the designated grower system is beyond flawed with an estimated 67% black market production. Should patients get their medicine free, at the expense of our children?

Production growers will eliminate the illicit market completely when it goes recreational in the next five years, (according to my crystal ball). No money dealing or growing it, no criminal element, not rocket science. That is when new taxes will be levied, not from the patients but from the potheads.

We want and need healthy businesses (LP's) that will put their marihuana and therefore their patients first. You wouldn't want to buy from questionable growers, just like you wouldn't want an unlicensed dentist.

You can't stop the new system, worry about what you can control. Donate to the lawsuit, write your politicians, we(wannabe LP's) are fighting for you in another way that will work, just not in the short term, unfortunately. Remember many of us are patients too, we get it.

The survival of the illicit market hinges on how much the government will tax in the future. If the government gets greedy, like in Washington state, then the illicit market will thrive. If the government just keeps it as corporate tax plus hst then there is a real possibility large illicit indoor operations will be a thing of the past. Greenhouse and especially outdoor grows are a different matter.

True that! The illicit market needs a minimum of a 100% mark up though. I do believe there will be room for some special taxes, slow at first to squeeze the black market, then more like alcohol, what 120%. Outdoor cannot match the quality, greenhouses come in second, after true indoor grows. Canadians will never smoke crap again, we know better.

Trust me we all know its the recreational markets you guys are after
otherwise your business plans would be utterly useless, there is not enough money in it
with only 25,000 to 30,000 patients,
When recreational comes on line....i'm sure that sick people will be no more than an after thought
its better the evil we know than the one that is being created.
Im sure one of the LP types will be posting in here soon to set us sick people straight

People still have to be able to afford it to buy it. Until it becomes cheaper to buy it than it is to grow it, people are going to continue to grow it. I get the impression from here that not many people are going to give up their gardens come April 1.

Reasonable access....hmmmm...everything kind of hinges on that buzz term eh? It is something that will have to be defined because what's reasonable for me might not be reasonable for someone else.

Ok I will take the bait.
Long term no doubt it is the recreational market that I am interested in.
25-30k patients will grow to 300k within 2 years (strictly my estimate).
When recreational comes online sick people will still be in my thoughts. I have looked after a few EOL patients, have you?
My son is very ill and is an MMAR patient. Marijuana along with a variety of other drugs allow him to function.
It is possible to be involved in this industry and still have compassion.

My prescription would cost in the low 20,000s each year and I work full time
and could never afford it so I highly doubt anyone on disability will be able to
So how is it we are supposed to believe that your business models include
the sick ,when we are the ones who can least afford to purchase from you
at least be up front about it , cause when it comes down to devoting garden space
to the high cbd strains over your most popular recreational seller I will bet who
will win out ......

I am an advocate for the new MMPR.
I also believe patients should be able to grow 5-6 plants themselves. I hope that this happens, I believe it will happen. I think the courts will recognize the needs of the patients.
Strains will be grown based on market demand.
I dont think its crap. I think it is a great opportunity to pursue something that is potentially very profitable and can make a difference in our society.

You potential LPs are counting on a couple of things. One thing is....are doctors gonna just start signing? Mine wont ever sign. What makes you think they will suddenly change? Its gonna go from 30,000 now to 300,000 patients in 2 years? Good luck. People investing their life savings in this should think twice. What if Conroy wins? There is a long history of judges siding with patients time and again. I for one wont be signing up and know others who wont be either. You all might invest all this money and be sitting on piles of pot you can even sell because real patients want edibles, tictures etc. Read the message boards...people aren't buying it. People cant see for dollar signs from Harper on down.

I have a feeling when half of these LP's go bankrupt because they cant advertise, have 800 pounds to destroy and have 30 patients (10 are the people they are already selling to now) there's gonna be some sweet deals on ballasts, fans etc on Kijiji. I personally believe about 5 LPs will be around in 2 years.

Yes doctors will sign.
Consultations make me think they will.
You can find investors instead of using your life savings.
If Conroy wins then both programs will run.
I hope the judges see that there is a need for patients to grow their own.
You are correct that in the short term we might not be able to sell what we grow.
I do read the message boards.
I also know "real patients", my son is one of them.
