Can 400 w grow dense buds?

Ok so a grower I know has a current setup of a 400 w hps with air cooled hood w/ 2 x 6" inline fines over a 2x3 ft flood and drain tank/tray in a sog set up this is their flower room. They are on their third harvest and are just having a hell of a time getting good dense buds. They are growing beautiful little indicas of a mother they got from bagseed but after pruning and curing the buds just come out real leafy and real fluffy. I dont know what to tell them because i too have had this issue with 400 w. I think the light is too high but in the summer they have heat issues and kind of have to keep it high. now that its cool things could be different. So tell me does anyone ever get dense top shelf buds off of 400 w setups and if so how?

how early are you harvesting? using molasses? using c02?

I am just harvesting my first white widow crop under a 400W, and the buds at the top of the canopy are so much denser than the buds I grew outside. And there were fewer leaves.I used Fox Farm Grow Big, Tiger Bloom, and Big Bloom along with Gravity(can't remember who makes it). I haven't figure out how to cool my space or the CO2. I just leave the window open. And I had spider mites.It looks like I'm going to get 1/2 oz per plant. Next crop I'm going to add Beastie Bloomz and I'm going to try figure out the airflow issue. So with a little work dense buds are possible, especially since he seems to know a lot more than i do.
Just don't harvest early. Most plants take more than 8 weeks to ripen. That is the most important thing I learned off this site. And while you are growing trim all the popcorn stuff off the bottom. I think I would have had a larger harvest if I had done that.

I think he may have harvested a week early or so he did week 8 i told him to wait a bit but he felt they werent progressing. no molasses no co2 anyone that can point me to useful info on those with flood and drain would be appreciated.

useful information, I would say check out products like Bud Candy or carboload..They are both products of advanced nutrients,,,Their website is crawling with this sort of info...

i was happy with my 4... for a bout a month! go big or go home i got a 4 and a 6 side by side sweet. you can get some buds but bigger is better. get a glass sheild so you can have it close. plus a 6 and a 4 is really about a 7 dollar difference there like the same price

Dont see why his 400 w wouldnt be bringing dense buds, Is the bulb ok? it also depends on the strain, how the plants have been grown ect. Check my avator she was under a 400 w
