Building new Veg room

Hey guys, I have one large room split into two rooms for the moment but want to turn it into one large flowering room to accommodate more plants. My options are to build another room in the basement for vegging/clones/mothers or throw up a tent in the basement instead of building a room. The tent would be ideal because I am renting and dont want to spend money finishing the basement when I may move in the next year or so. Just wondering if what I want to do can be done in a tent with keeping the temps down. Here is what I have been thinking:\

The above tent could potentially hold up to 4 of these:

Here are my questions:

1. Can I throw 3 or 4 of those in a tent and keep the temps reasonable?

2. How many vegging plants in soil can I fit under one of those quantum badboys? (Dimensions of the fixture is 46"x24")

Any help would be appreciated guys. Only other thing I didnt mention is that I would probably be adding an exhaust fan and carbon filter as well to the tent.

Hey, I'm gonna suggest you build your own tent. It's super easy, super cheap, and you get to customize everything exactly the way you want it. It's basically just white and black poly and 2x2's. I'd take a couple pics of mine but the lights are off right now. You can google DIY grow tent instructions and check out what some people are doing though for ideas. There's a few threads on this site as well about it.

I think thats the best decision economically. I like the grow tent because I can take it to a new location if I wanted to where the diy one is more permanent but it would cost less than $25-30 to make my own so I am leaning towards that. How many plants do you think I can have under each 8 bulb fixture?

To determine how many plants you can fit under those lights or in that tent you really need to give more info.

* How long do you veg your plants for
* At what height do you normally switch to flower
* What size are the pots they are in at the end of veg
* Do you LST, Top, FIM, Supercrop

Sorry, I should have included that.

* usually veg for 8 weeks
* switch to flower when they are about 24" tall
*I start out in cups, then go to 3 gal pots, then 5 gal pots about halfway through veg or later.
*As of now I have been topping, that's it.

Hey Bud, if you are looking to get multiple T5 systems then look for a 12 or 16 lamp one and save yourself some money. First off the 8 lamp Quantum is 49" x 24" (you quoted the box dimensions). The 12 lamp Quantum goes for around $280 and is 49" x 35" and the 16 lamps one goes for around $355 and is 49" x 46".

A 5 gallon pot is about 12" across. If your plants are 2' tall at the end of veg I am guessing you probably need about 12-14" width for each plant. So I think you could fit 8 under an 8 lamp unit; 12 under a 12 lamp unit; and 16 under a 16 lamp unit.

Not sure how many plants you are trying to do but at some point it's probably just better to get a 600w or 1000w ballast, hood, an MH light for veg. The 8 lamps Quantum is already 440w of power and they do give off heat that needs to be accounted for. I have an 8 lamp in my veg room for clones and early vegging plants and it adds a fair amount of heat to the room that I need to take into account when cooling. A 16 lamp Quantum or two 8 lamp units are going to pull 900w of electricity and not give you near the penetration as an HID light. You'd be able to get about 16 plants under those 16 fluoro bulbs. If you did a 600w HID you could still probably get 16 plants under there and with a 1000w you could get close to 25.

A DIY tent isnt portable? Nonsense! For lighting support you build an a frame (like a saw horse, which the make steel corners for so you slide the 2/4 in http://www.hardwarestore.com/media/product/619263_front200.jpg ) and PVC pipe for walls.

You might want to re-read the post. He never said it was portable.

And the link that you posted is incorrect. That hardware is actually for sawhorses and is angular. What he would need is a framing angle or framing anchor. For a small non-permenant structure you really don't need them anyway. Your room won't need to support that type of load.

Sorry this part threw me.

If saying "take it with me" doesn't mean portable, I need to relearn what portable means.

I think you need to re-learn how to read dude. He is saying he likes the grow tent cause he can take it with him and he likes the DIY tent cause it is cheap. 2 seperate tents dude.

And also said DIY tents are more permanent than purchased ones.
Furry, as it was said already, go with I DIY tent for price, make it as portable as you want it, and to the size you need based on the lighting ou want. Get the best of it all. I'm not gonna clutter your thread any more as I'm here to try to help and not debate meanings of portable, permenent, DIY and purchased product. I was just saying DIY can be just as portable as a pre-fab tent, and better suited to any grower using a tent, for affordability and customization.

If you went with the 4x8 tent or built a similiar size DIY thats a decision that can differ for many reasons but its really a grower preference i would go with what you think and prefer. For lighting in that grow space I would go with either 2 1000w or 3 600w MH. i only use the T5 for clones and very early veg. You could also look into a T5 on 1 side for clones/mothers a 1000w on the other for some real growth in veg. just my 2 cents

I was thinking of the t5's because of heat but I do have a 600w ballast and hood I am not using so maybe I will use that for veg on one side of the tent and one of the t5 badboys on the other side like you said for mothers and clones. Hopefully that setup wont be too bad on the overall air temp, guess we will find out. The other reason I was thinking of a pre-built tent as opposed to a diy tent is the fact that I can lock it up where the home made one will just be velcro. Guess its not a bid deal though.

I'd use a tent before a DIY job. Those things are smash and grab jobs in my opinion. Mylar is always tearing and you can't hang shit anywhere. Just get a tent man. You'll be happy you did.

i also will use tents over DIY. if heat becomes a problem just get a blower to exaust the hot air. I believe you said it was in the basement so i think you should be able to keep ideal temps pretty easy
