Bug ID? Photo

Hi all,

I've just noticed two of these in my hydro garden. The photos aren't spectacular but you can imagine the difficulty in capturing a small flying insect with an iPhone.





These photos are of the last living moments of this bug's life but I fear he might have had buddies.

Wow, that second photo doesn't offer much, does it.

Looks like freindly fire as this bug does not look like any of the the bad bugs I know of. The top bad ones are spider mites, aphids, weevil, sciarid, thrips, white flies and gnats. There are many other bugs that may or may not be bad for a garden but IDK who or what this thing is. I wouldn't worry.

It does have wings, yes. It reminds me of a fruit fly. It could very well be a fruit fly.

I gave most of the branches a shake and I could only spot two of them. Or the same one twice. Definitely not an infestation though.

Not really shaped like a fruit fly but similar looking, at least to me. It looks too long to be a fruit fly but from the pic it's hard to tell. It looks to have more a fungus gnat look but with either there is almost always more then one.
Looking through the images I have of good and bad garden bugs I can't say, does look most similar to gnat or fly but IDK. At least there was only one, something good I guess.

Thanks for the link. That list is definitely longer than anything I've seen that was msrijuana specific.

So the basic plan is to wait and see?

I was just about to atart a thread on the same bugs I think lol. The little guys are maybe a bit smaller than a fruit fly in my case. Fruit flies are a bit thicker I think. I was away for 3 days and came back to a bunch of these things. They seem to die pretty quick as they do't seem to be getting worse. I run a flood and drain and also a NFT tray and the nft seems to be worse but it is farther along as well. They dont seem to do much and I think they may be hatching out of water. If they are coming out of root zone they must be hardy in larvae form as I add 75ml H2O2 to res weekly. I will keep searching and post findings. Dont think thier fungus knats, I had them once with soil, what a bitch they we're lol.

As to the aforementioned flying insect, I would bet that it is either a fungus gnat or a winged root aphid. Dig around in your soil a bit - if you see tiny worms (about 3 mm long) with black heads then you have fungus gnats. If you see really tiny round bugs (less than 1 mm) or a funky waxy residue near your roots, then it is root aphids for sure......not nearly as easy to deal with.
