I've tried hoops, macro photography and even my student rated microscope and non are as easy I wish they were.

Anyone have a favorite viewing device you'd like to recommend? Something that would take a pic would be nice also. Ty

Digital microscope. IWOBAC brand on Amazon, has a deal, less than $25 right now. It connects with wifi to your phone, tablet, or computer. It has a button on it to take pictures, and a focus knob. I used it to take the trichome pics in my grow journal.

Macro lenses are great, but lighting is the challenge. Makes dope ass pictures though!

But I don't really bother checking trichomes. It's easier to judge the whole plant for ripeness.

The problem with most magnifying devices is they have super shallow depth of field and majority of your image ends up out of focus.

Macro photographers use focus stacking software to merge multiple images together so that more of the final image ends up in focus. Macro photography is an expensive rabbit hole. You need, at a minimum, a steady tripod, macro focusing rails, a good lens/camera, lighting, etc. The best macro photographers are using expensive devices like the cognisys stackshot. Those ultra closeup macro videos of rotating buds are usually shot with cognisys systems and involve thousands of photos, all focus stacked and timelapsed together to get the final product.

If you look at trichomes for ripeness you're looking at it at the wrong end IMO. A stressed or malnourished plant will show ripened trichomes early on, that doesn't mean it's ripe and ready for harvest.

The best markers to me are flower cluster formation and how completetly formed they are. It's better to learn how a properly and healthy flower is suppose to look like at harvest than to look at trichomes that you might find "ripe" a month or more from harvest.

Another vote for "no need to look at trichs to determine ripeness/harvest time."

However, when I do want to look at stuff up close on the buds, I've found my little soldering magnifying glass/helping hands works well enough (like this, the kind with a smaller lens inside the main lens with a higher magnification ratio): https://www.amazon.com/Magnifier-Adjustable-Fabrication-Inspection-Micro-Objects/dp/B0BR7DVP9F

The things with super high magnification are usually too fiddly for me to want to deal with. Even a phone camera at maximum zoom is pretty good.

I like to take close up photos of the buds to see the trichomes. Modern phones have unbelievable cameras. Like others have said you can look macro at the plant as a whole to judge ripeness. Clear trichomes make the buds sparkle like a disco ball. Cloudy trichomes closer to harvest looks more like it snowed all over the buds.

I can see good tric visibility using a standard modern Samsung phone. Just gotta get it to focus when you zoom in. Then filter it a bit.
