Growing from Bagseed

Bagseed among serious growers is pretty much looked down upon-at least by those who swear by brand name seeds. There is some good reasoning behind this. The brand name seeds do have strong genetics and the strain for the most part is stable so you know what you are getting. They were also created in a controlled environment and bred with specific traits that a grower can select and get the type of plant/bud they want. All growers of any type of plant do this. Tomatoes, flowers, peppers-you name it. There are specific breeds that people like for their situation and/or preferences.

Bagseed is a gamble. Its from unknown sources. You don't know the conditions it was grown in. And more than likely it was some sort of organized crime cartel outdoor guerilla grow that is notorious for irresponsible growing practices that tend to ruin the grow areas-or at least that's what the mainstream media would have you believe. Because its been pollinated, the THC level is decreased by up to 25%. So if a strain produces 20% THC, whether its pollinated, it could drop to 15%. Also, the seeds you get from a bag could be the child of hemp or ditch weed or a herme. You never know.

Growing brand name seeds does have its disadvantages too. First, you have to acquire them which is a dilemma. You have to order from an out of country source or smuggle them in yourself, or if you are lucky enough to have a friend who has some. There are a few states in the US where you can buy clones and make your own seeds but for most of us, that would require some traveling that is just not feasible. Many seed shops offer feminized seeds which were either treated with some sort of hormone like gibberellic acid or females were stressed to create hermes which produce female seeds-but hermes will be more susceptible to creating other herme plants. Plus the cost of the seeds, and the worry that you will even get them.

Bagseed is free and easy to come by. You can go to your buddies house and grab a few seeds from them or just look in your own bag and pick out some. Bagseed is also mystery. Since you don't know what the genetics are, you could get anything. If you get a big old sack of commercial grade weed, it was more than likely grown outdoors and is a hybrid of a hybrid. Hybrid seeds don't grow to be the mother or the father, especially if the parents were hybrids as well. Hybrid seeds are their own strain. Some may grow to be like great uncle sativa, some might end up like a distant cousin skunk or northern lights. So bagseed can potentially create an exotic variety of plants. With proper care every plant can reach its full potential and rival the bag it came from. Granted not all good genes show up and you may end up with some plants that are utter garbage, but odds are, this wont be the norm.

Now what to do with all this weed? Invest in some storage equipment. A vacuum sealer or canning jars are great, or anything that can produce an air tight seal. don't store damp or uncured weed away for a long time as it may end up molding. Glass canning jars would be my first recommendation because the glass is non porous so the THC wont be absorbed nor will any flavors be imparted. The disadvantage of glass jars is that they shatter when dropped onto hard surface and they will allow light to get in. A simple solution is to wrap the jars in newspaper and put them in a box in your garage or basement amongst the Xmas decorations and other crap that hasn't been touched in years. Be sure to store you weed in a cool, dark place. Do not expose to air, light, or temperatures under 35 degrees over 110 degrees. This means do not store in the attic or the freezer.

Its not recommended that you grow and sell, especially at the same location. Each one invites its own set of problems when it comes to detection. Put them together and you have doubled your risk and then some. But if you must, then here are some guidelines to help keep you safe.

First and foremost; pay yourself first. Keep the best buds for yourself. You did all the work and took all the risk to grow it, you deserve a reward of the best stuff. If you make hash, which you really should, then make that YOUR hash. Share with your friends, but don't sell it.
If you intend on growing again, keep enough to last you thru the next grow and harvest. Only you can determine this amount and timeframe. If you grow outdoors, this is an annual thing so the timeline is a year. If you smoke an OZ a month, then keep close to a LB for yourself. If you are growing indoors in a SOG setup with a 4 month clone to harvest schedule, and you only smoke an 8th a month then you only need about an OZ for yourself. Always save some extra incase your crop fails.

Sell buds from the same plant for a premium price and give it a single run brand name. Keep different plant's buds separate or mix in buds that were the same color prior to harvesting. Do not try to pass of your home grown as brand name if it isn't. that's just plain dishonest. You may end up with only a few 8ths of "Pink Pussy" or "Skull Sword" but people will pay more if it has a name. They will also appreciate the curing and no seeds.

Take the leftover buds and bud chunks and mix them together like a salad and sell that. I like to brand this as "Bag Lady". A big selling point of Bag Lady is its a smorgasbord of different kinds of weed in one bag. Kinda like a sampler platter. Price would be dependent on how well it smoked, of course. More than likely if you take good care of the plants and properly cure it, the smoke will be superior to most commercial grades-like the bag that the seeds came from. The fact that its sin semilla and cured, automatically raises the potency and the price. Your friends will be back for more and more.

I would suggest to not add flavors to your weed. Some people do this, I'm just not a fan, weed tastes great on its own. If you want flavored weed, only use fresh and natural ingredients. Do this during the curing process and in small batches, just in case. Do not use perfumes, extracts, or oils. If you want a menthol flavor, buy or pick some fresh mint. If you want some citrus, use the peels from grapefruit or whatever you wish to use. Keep the pieces of flavorings large enough to easily be removed, but small enough to permeate the entire batch evenly. A few small cinnamon sticks would be much better than one large one or sprinkling your buds with cinnamon powder. You don't want to actually smoke the flavoring, you just want to infuse your buds with the accent of the flavor. Stay away from things that are wet like fruit pulp, liquor, or alcohol. Fruit pulp may spoil and contaminate your weed, or it may just take too long to cure. Liquor will make the weed sticky and scorch when smoked and alcohol will make the smoke more harsh. Liquids also invite mold and make curing take that much longer. Sugar is also a big no no. It will caramelize and snap when burned and sugar is a fuel for bacteria that eats dead plant matter. It will add no flavor to your buds. Also most aromas will change when burned. What smells good raw, may smell like ass when set on fire. It will also not add any potency to your weed.

A nice gesture is to invite a select few close friends to partake in a sampling party. Tell them that you went out of town for a show and ran into a guy who hooked you up with all sorts of dime bags at a kick ass price. Roll up some joints, cut them in half, and enjoy them.

A few tips on selling what you grow:

No one can know you are growing.
This is the biggest rule out there. If you have ask the question "Why not?", then you should not grow.

Do not be known as someone who always has weed.
Tell your buyers that it will take anywhere from an hour to 2 days to get it. You don't want people to know that you have a large stash at all times or to think that you are the top of the ladder. This invites as much trouble as telling people you grow. If the question ever comes up as to who your supplier is, tell them that you don't even know the guy, you have to go thru someone else to get it. This is rule less about being honest and more about personal safety.

Only sell to a few people that you really
trust.
Explain to them that if anyone they know wants weed, they have to go thru them. You don't want people you don't know coming over or even sitting out in the car in front of your house waiting while your friend comes in. If that does happen, you tell your friend that you are dry and don't know when you will re up again.

Set up only certain days/times for sales.
How many times have you heard about dealers getting busted and the neighbors saying that people were in and out of that house at all hours of the night and morning. High traffic for a residence is not common and noticed by people you may not notice observing.
Meet people at different locations.
This can be risky because you may get pulled over or in an accident. You never know.

Charge consistent, competitive prices and keep your weights accurate.
No one likes getting ripped off. No one likes hearing that other people got a better deal from the same source for the same stuff. Keep your ear to the street as to what prices are and adjust yours accordingly. I personally hate to pay more that $30 an 8th, regardless of quality, but i have paid up to $50 an 8th when that's what the going rate was.
