Bag-Seeds...are they worth germinating?

RIU:

Here are some pics of some Sour Diesel that I picked up in the NYC metro area. Sour is an understatement. This stuff wreaks of wholesome deliciousness when burnt. Really fuel-like with a nice cerebral clear high!

Is it safe to assume that if I germinate these seeds I found in the bud I could possibly grow the same type of Sour D? There have been a lot of posts concerning this topic but I've never really found definitive answers.

Check out the pics. Obviously one of them is a weakling. There's one seed that's really dark. Is that necessarily a good thing?

Thanks folks! :leaf:

Yeh long as the seeds aren't too long gone (dried) you should be fine. Just hope it was another SD that pollinated it otherwise you'll have a hybrid.

Edit: 3rd seed (light one) seems immature

No, I won't be bothering with the pale one. I guess I'm curious if there are any success stories with bagseeds. If it is at all possible to grow something of equal flavor and potency as what was in the bag.

Bag seeds are a crap shoot. They do have the same genetics as your herb but most likely the plant was germinated by a hermaphrodite. If so you have a greater chance of the plant going herm (so watch it like a hawk). There are some tricks to improving the chance of growing a female (do some searches).

Spraying and/or soaking the seeds with or in ethylene along with an ethylene foliar spray at certain times during veg and flower will virtually guarantee female expression. I've been experimenting with ethylene for a few months with 100% females so far. Good luck!

That's very interesting, I will do a bit of research on ethylene. The "tricks" you were talking about, are you referring to nitrogen levels, daylight hours, and things like that? Or were you specifically talking about the ethylene.

So, if it isn't hermie and turns out female, are the chances still slim on getting quality Sour D?

dump the seeds in water, those that float are garbage, those that sink, grow till they stink

Hi, tricks I was talking about are as you stated. Ferts, temps, etc.

The seeds probably an F1 hybrid and if grown in a good environment should produce quality herb thats Sour D IF she was pollinated by Sour D male, maybe something better if another strain pollinated.?

Over the last 60 days I've used ethylene to feminize seeds; to guarantee female expression from seed grown plants; to increase stem girth just before flowering, and to shorten the flowering cycle.

I'm no expert but so far have produced 100% females from hermaphrodite seeds. I dove into researching feminizing when a Purple Diesel herm pollinated my garden of stable Blueberry Northern Lights, Super Skunk, BC Big Bud and I-5 females). Was livid bc the seed bank swore Purp Diesel was stable but instead of fire bombing the seed shop, figured Id give these new crosses a shot. Lemme know how yours goes.?

Id go 4 it 4 sure man.
All Ive got finished so far is bag seed and FOR ME, bag seeds were easier than breeder seeds all the way around.
I LOVE SOUR D and I have some G13 Diesel and Sour Cream going for my first strains.

Start a journal and Ill sub man!

any bag of seed is prolly gonna be easier to grow than seed bank seeds becuase there seeds that you yourself have pulled out of bud therefore the seeds would be younger and germinate better/easier.

in saying that i have 4 bag of seed going at the momment 2 inside 2 outside
and they are doing much beter than the 2 clones i have indoors.

4th week of flowering bag of seed and i must say it is starting to smell really nice

(viable seeds)

Fresh seeds have a waxy glimmer and a hard, intact shell.
Colours range from a buff through a dark brown, and from light grey to almost black colours. Often seeds are mottled with brown or black spots, or lines on a lighter field.

Green or whitish seeds are usually immature and will germinate feebly if at all.
Shiny, very dark brown or black seeds often mean the contents are fermented and the embryo is dead. Fermented seeds crush easily with finger pressure and are hollow or dusty inside.

Brick or compressed cannabis seeds must be checked as seeds that are bruised or crushed are not viable.

they all sink eventually from water logging haha but yeah man theres nothin wrong with bagseeds they come from the plants jus like the namebrand seeds the only difference is the somewhat ensured backgrounds they say its blank x blank from blankinstan but are you super sure thats exactly from where they say prolly not its kinda like buyin pedigree animals you pay for the security blanket to fall back on if anything goes wrong you blame them...... but most seedbanks do have stable strains and actually have the breeds they sell with bagseed you can end up with unstable phenoms but really its the same thing as what they sell

oh and these were bagseed from corn mids

my sour diesel mother came from this exact circumstance. she was a loan bean in a bag of dank. never had a problem with hermi's.
i have now crossed her with ed rosenthal's superbud, and also sugar mountain (northern lights x white widow)

i am currently growing one of the latter

Awesome! Got any pics of the Sour D mother in veg or flower? I really hope I have the same luck:leaf:
