backyard privacy with only 6 foot fences??? How do you backyard growers do it??

So I am about to get planting for my first outdoor attempt at my new place of residence. Everything is green lit to go (landlord, medical etc. etc.) Only thing now is how am I gonna keep these out of view from my neighbors?? The fences are a standard 6 foot, and by county ordinance can not be built any higher. There is only one window that I am mainly worried about, it is the 2nd story bedroom from a neighboring house. All other neighbors would have to be pretty snoopy to see my plants but I guess if they wanted to they could peep over the fence. My only thoughts are to plant something very tall and vigorious like sun flowers or tall beans, maybe hops? Maybe a hoop house or cold frame could help as well, (as many people grow seasonal gardens here). Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!

Carport or greenhouse ... the rest of the location is up to you. It's not as if you're not aware of all the potentials having done this before. Just not sure I'd cold test the neighbors with a fully visible grow. That second story overlook just makes me cringe. I'd want to be really sure you immediates are not prohibs or thumpers with kids for sure.

buy some pieces of corogated fiberglass...it is very cheap and works great....you can make a top and two sides ...maybe hang a couple of those upside down tomato baskets on the ends to break up and distract...good luck

Hmmm...could you not just train the plant lower? keep it low closer to the ground...just go out and bend it over everyday...lol. it will eventually start to grow up from the sides so it will look like a lot of small plants...but really it is one large one turned sideways...

Ya I can but this single upper story window next door can practicality see the whole yard... :(

not exactly sure what you mean, is there a picture of this anywhere??

start them late. and keep them small. id start last week of june. they should grow about 3 feet tall. and id grow rows of corn or sunflowers. had a friend put up a trampolin one time cut the cloth out and thickened up the sides with some heaverier shade cloth. also had a freind plant in a play house for kids he took the roof off.

Sounds like its may be a idea to grow in your backyard, If your neighbors can see your whole yard, they will probably know whats going on, I think it would be a huge gamble in my opinion. I think a greenhouse would be your only real option, stick some other normal garden plants in there as well. I wouldn't be going with a clear glass or clear plastic for the greenhouse, something that neighbors could not see into. Although, I have seen others here on RIU post pictures of stealth backyard grows, One plant was super cropped and had a round bush shape and the guy put red fake clip on flowers all over the plant. It made it look like a completely different plant just with those flowers. Something to think about.

i've got the same problem, one second story window from a neighbor and 6 foot tall fences that mean nothing because one of my neighbors has a trampoline and their kids are on it all summer.

there are two different greenhouses in this thread built by me. last year's GH didn't hold up so well, so i built a new one this year. both can be built in a few days for under $300. a worthy investment if you ask me.

corogated fiberglass is the stuff you see on some greenhouses...light can penetrate it but you can not look inside and see what is growing....you could make a lean to from the fence outwards so maybe 12 feet long by 5 feet deep with sheets of fiberglass on each side and the top .... google corrugated fiberglass and maybe green house and you will see...sheets are pretty cheap

If you have the money I would suggest building a shed, like the kind you keep tools and such in. We have one in our backyard surounded by plants and such. Also you could plant tall bushes around the inside of your fence.

Agree.

If it CAN be seen by the neighbors, IMO, it WILL be seen by the neighbors.

The greenhouse option seems to be the best compromise between security, privacy, and the ability to grow outdoors.

Do what you think is best, and good luck.

I would recommend lst'ing, keep them going sideways and you'll have huge bushes with lots of surface area, keep your production high but stature low. Also, interplant or plant around the sides of them with other, similar looking plants, high-energy green ones. Buy fake plastic tomatoes or other flowers/vegetables and tie them to your plants as they grow. Make it look like a thriving garden overall with several other kinds of plants and people's attention will wander; they're not going to stare and stare through a normal garden from their window to pick out the suspicious plants. most of the time.
