Autos not flowering until I reduce light time

Hey guys, im currently growing some auto northern lights. I have 3 plants one is one week older than the other two but got a little bit of stress so they look all the same. I started getting worried with them because it has been more than a month and they were not showing any signs of flowering, they only kept growing and growing so i decided to reduce light time slowly over a few days from 20/4 to 16/8, today i noticed that they are starting to show their sex. My question now is, was it because i increased the dark period or just a coincidence? My goals was not so much to make them flower because that wouldn't work with autos but to reduce their growth by giving them less light.

What do you guys think?

My understanding is that auto flowers flower irrespective of light/dark periods. As such, you changing the light/dark periods will not induce flowering or impact the growth. Think about it, if your hypothisis is correct then the converse would be true: 24/7 light would prevent flowering in an auto flower. Your auto flowered when it was due based on the ruderalis % in the plant. As far as reducing growth is concerned, I think reducing the amount of water is as important as reducing the amount of light. Give it less water to support new growth, coupled with less light if you want to stunt/ impede growth.

Not making any suggestion but I do it a bit different than most. I veg every plant, auto and photo, under 24/0 of T5HO, then move to a flowering area under 12/12 of 6-700w led according to season. I stopped worrying about schedules year ago and never looked back. All I've miss is those damn electric bills.

if they aint flowering under there own steam under 24/7, they aint auto, they might be super autos, they take longer to start flowering then ordinary autoes. they take 120+ days to finish off, where autos take about 90 days
