Nug density is influenced by genetics and environment. An indica dominant plant will have denser buds than a sativa. If you had a 9 week indica dominant plant the first three weeks of flower are mostly stretching and forming bud sites. The next three weeks the buds will form into their final shapes, hopefully closing all or most of the gaps. During the last two weeks of flowering they will get to their maximum density and potency.
