It is hard to give a specific time as to when they will be ready, some progress really quick, some slow. When you see that most of the white hairs (pistils) have turned orange and have receded into the buds, you are very close.
Next, if you have a magnifier start looking at the triches, they will go from clear to cloudy to dak orange red. Everyone has there own personal harvest time, but if your not sure, go with cloudy with a bit of reddish.

Tazz&indy pretty much said it. I would only add that from my personal preference I like Sativa a bit earlier when just over half the hairs have turned and the trichs are just cloudy with no amber. I like my Indica just as tazz stated with just a few amber trichs and mostly all the hairs red or orange. Too early and you risk losing a large part of the potency. Years ago I would get impatient sometimes and take them a bit early and I would regret it. Since in the 80's I was growing from the best bag seed I had a ready reference point to refer to and there was a couple times I took them too early and my grow wasn't as good as the parent weed the seed came from.
