are darker seeds males?

a friend just gave me two seeds of dank and one is almost black and the other is a lot brighter in color. is the darker one a male or can you not tell by the color of the seeds?

You can't tell the sex by the color of the seed no. You'll have to grow them, and flower them (or make clones that flower), to find out if they are male or female.

My old friends used to say the prettier a pattern and bigger a seed was the more likely it's a female which is completely untrue. The only thing you can tell from a seed is whether it is a mature seed or an under formed seed. A good mature seed will be large, dark, and most likely have a tiger pattern on it, immature seeds are the white and green ones.
