For some reason i can't figure out how to answer this question...lol Anyone know how to answer this?

  1. Explain how concepts like gene, allele, mutation, etc. help us to better understand the source of variant traits in a species and how traits are passed on.

thanks :)))

Step 1 is to know what the italicized words mean. If you've thoroughly digested the relevant portions of the text, the question becomes "fairly explanatory", as the man in the movie said. I'm not trying to be a jerk, but in this instance there's no substitute for having read the material to the point of having it more or less memorized.

If someone asks you, for example, "what is an allele?" and you can give a correct, complete answer from memory (no peeking), that's step one ready for a checkmark. cn

I understand the concept of the question and how traits are past through procreation, what i don't get is, how does it help us understand the SOURCE of variant traits?

Sounds to me like you almost answered your own question. (almost!)

The source of the variant traits has to be in the structure of the gene on at least one of the two copies each cell holds in its genome. The two gene-copies are the alleles. If a cell is heterozygous in a given gene, it has two alleles, each carrying one trait. One trait will be expressed (dominant), the other is called recessive. For a recessive trait to be expressed, the cell needs to be homozygous in that gene.

So the source of the variant trait will be mutation of some sort, and its behavior in propagation is well-described by the classical Mendelian model. OK I've puked a lot of deep memory ... hope it helps some. cn
