I have a 1000 watt hps and i know i can veg under that but i dont really want to run that for 18 plus hrs in that space. my question is, what other light source can i use to veg about 5plants under. Im thinking about cfls, how many would i need?

Good thing about CFLs is they can be much closer to the plants, so you don't need a lot of them if you place them appropriately. And they out perform most tube fluoros(unless you have an array of them).

Generally around 25 actual watts per cubic foot. You could push that up to 50, but I don't think you'll notice a big difference as photosynthetic rates are not linear. Instead increasing rather poorly after a certain point. It resembles an arc, quickly increasing, but tapers off(especially without CO2 'doping').
