A question for you 10 oz/plant yielders

When you're selecting which plants to bloom, do you get to the point where you can judge yield based a lot on root mass? Are there benchmarks along the way, from early on, as to where root develop should be at each benchmark if you're going to consistently achieve >3 oz/plant?

I get that veg time has a lot to do with it, and there are a lot of areas to suck at that would reduce yield. But I'm now focusing on roots (i.e., I bought a bunch of stuff) and want to see results.

In my experience being familiar with a given strain is more help than most everything else. Also veging till the plant is mature will have a big affect on yields. Trellis or scrog helps a great deal (you can literally double your yields) by helping them hold the weight. Also a lot, and I do mean a lot, of people are hitting with to much light and that can work against you. But the biggest thing is size…. A 18 inch plant isn’t gonna do what a 4 footer will do. As for roots, if your clone or seedling has strong white roots you’ve done great and should plant her deep and keep her happy.

I think more roots equals more potential weight but two plants with a similar size root mass won't necessarily yield the same.
Personally I haven't noticed anything to indicate that a plant is going to yeild well or not during veg.
Fwiw I pride myself in creating a healthy root ball, some might say ocd but I believe (I know) it pays off.

That the roots before leaving the 1ltr pot.

And the roots from a 15ltr flowered plant.

At a rough figure I get 1oz per litre based on a root system like these from a decent yeilder.

I only use a+b grown in coco.

Thanks. Running perpetual bloom. Getting better at technique but need to resist the compulsion to fill seats as soon as they're vacant ... I ramped up my # of clones per all strains, focusing primarily on my main 4 (Side A strains), so I have more mature plants ready at any given time. Plus, I absolutely need to be consistently aggressive with lolli-popping (some strains more than others). Just had 3 Bruce Banners yield trash little buds after a few successful rounds. I'd been flowering them too young and allowing too many side branches to flower....

- a fast-flowering strain like Grape Ape, I start from the flood tray and don't top it -- a young plant does pretty well.
- other strains definitely require a longer veg time, especially after they've been topped -- I put topped plants on shelves, but the canopy for all plants is about even.
