A Medium Question

I'm using 2 6" rockwool cubes standing on top of each other. Surrounded below, the sides and on top with perlite. I'm hand watering from the top. My question is how long will it take before waterings?

I've read that rockwool holds more water, while at the same time holding more oxygen... also that it is impossible to over water (so long as it has adequate drainage, I assume). So if this is the case, and I was watering soil in similar size buckets... wouldn't the ROCKWOOL take about the same time between waterings?

ummm... yes.. LOL... Rockwool may actually take longer than soil to dry out.....

Thanks Knowm... I'm just a little anxious with this new medium, it's not as forgiving as soil.

I clone in 1" RockWool cubes. There have been times when I've taken more cuttings than I need in order to pass a few on to friends. The extra cuttings are put into shallow TupperWare containers with about a quarter inch of RO water in the bottom. The RW cubes just sit in the water 24/7. Sure enough ... in about ten days or so the roots appear. No harm, no foul. Just be sure not to squeeze the RockWool in order to get excess water out because that destroys the wicking and aeration properties of the RW.

This is my personal grow... we're hoping to be starting the big one either tomorrow or the day after. That too is going to be in a different medium... we're going deep water, so long as we get the troughs. The troughs are 6' by 2' and hold 90 litres of water. I'm not sure yet about the size of the pump we are going to need or how many. I've researched it fairly well, and my only hope now is that I haven't spoken too soon. This rests on us getting the troughs, hopefully they'll be getting removed from the builders yard tomorrow. If all goes well each trough should hold 24 plants.

So is the rockwool going to be directly in these troughs? Or how is it going to be set up? Because if the RW is just sat in troughs, then that would be NFT, not DWC. I might be confused as to what you're doing though

no, sorry confusing the 2 grows. The hydro with the rockwool is my own personal grow. The troughs are for a bigger one that I do with someone else. On the trough grow the plants are going to be in deep water, with plenty of oxygen being pumped in.
