Time to start my first journal of my first grow! Yay go me.
List of specifications:
Mylarbox 90x50x160cm with 250w MH lamp for veg and 250W HPS for flower.
Using various nutrients from HESI.
Seeds: 1 mystery that I had saved up for many years(!) and 5x Northern Lights X Big Bud non-feminised from the seed bank Nirvana.
SOIL: by the way i now know that this was a bad choice - took 2 different soils from local diy and gardening shops and mixed them - one soil had perlite and the other had a good reputation and lots of nutrients. The mixed soils gave a pH of about 5,7 so I added a little dolomite lime to raise the ph and some fine sand for added drainage.
What's happened so far:
Germinated my mystery mid-october and kept it going on the windowsill while I waited for other seeds to arrive. I think it might have started going into flowering really early (looked vaguely like a female to my inexperienced eye - but time will tell) then luckily the other seeds arrived in time enough for me to put the mystery in the box together with the NLxBB on a proper veg cycle before anything got out of hand.
Germinated end of october with paper towels in a warm, dark cupboard, took 2 days for seeds to pop. 1 seed took another day. More about this seed later.
Put the germinated seeds into soil and left them on the windowsill for a few days. Cotyledons had all arrived by the 6th nov. Then moved them to the box and started 18/6 light cycle with the MH lamp.
Growth was slow at first but speeded up except for 1 plant, which just stopped completely. Yeah u guessed it, this was the seed which took a day longer to germinate. I left it for a week and did nothing apart from continuing to add water. It had only grown 1 pair of normal leaves and then just stopped completely! Decided to re-pot it - it was then I discovered that it had only grown 1 single root! Really weird. In retrospect I can only assume that it was waterlogged soil. The plant picked itself up after a re-pot into fresh soil but it's never gonna catch up with the others. My bad for reacting too slow / watering too much or whatever, bad genetics who knows?
Started adding nutrients from day1 - another bad move, since the soil already contains more than enough nutrients for the first 4 weeks or so. Then I found this site and got educated
Stopped adding nutrients and all new growth since then has been fine.
I have re-potted as soon as I noticed growth slowing and basically by feel. I fear now that ALL the pots I'm using are too small. Have to go shopping and see what to do about that. Not yet a major problem but it might be soon.

to see the dilemmas I've been having over the last few days and my first contacts with RIU.
That brings me more or less to NOW. Exactly 3 weeks inside the box in veg. The decent plants are about 35cm tall and the grow room is getting rather cramped, as are the pots.
My current problem is (still) when to flip to flowering..?
Firstly, I cannot let the plants get higher than 1metre by harvest time due to height restrictions in the box. Secondly, I have the 1 stunted plant which I would like to let develop a little longer before flowering. Thirdly, I want to have a clone/slow veg. area ready by the time I am able to confirm some female plants, with a view to taking clones for the next harvest. This is important for me. I hate wasting energy on plants from seed that might turn into males...
Gonna take some pics now.
