5' x 5' x 9' closet for under $1000?

I am planning on flowering in a 5x5x9 foot closet. I am wondering is is possible to set up a flower room in this space for under $1000? I was thinking a 180 cfm 4" fan/ filter combo with either a 600 or 1000 watt air cooled light. What do you guys think would be my best option? THanks for the help.

Sure, a good 1000 watt hps with hood will run $300-$500+$150 for fan+$25 for insulated ducting+$250 for filter. I would go with atleast 6" fan for 1000 watt. Your biggest problem will be the radiant heat coming off the light and the heat generated by the ballast, you will need some way to bring cool air into the space. A 1000 watt might be a little overkill for that space though.

Nope not overkill in the least, once you figure what you are doing you will realize that is the right amount of watts for that amount of space, anything less is cheating you plants DNA, if it's up to it.

Your biggest problem will be heat, Get a magnum xxl hood in the 6 or 8 inch ducting, the 8 inch model is a little bigger. You will take full advantage of spreading that light around evenly, and it cools VERY well. It is slim and the air goes perfectly right past the bulb. No heat in on the top of the hood at all. I have a 600 watt and it is about 6 inches from some of the tops. Now that I think about it get the 8 inch magnum xxl hood, you might need it.

Your dollar point is low for a system setup around a 1000 watts, it just might be too hot to run without spending some cash on good ventilation and maybe A/C.
I have a 600 watter in a 4x4x7. I run a A/c unit connected to a master controller. It comes on every 20 or so minutes for about 2 minutes while the light is on. That is with a huge magnum hood, a 6 inch hydrofarm fan cooling the hood, exiting outside, pulling 74 degree air through it. They will get hot and after light the number one thing you have to throw money at is cooling and ventilation. Good luck and let us know how it goes.........JR

Thanks for the replies. I guess i am gonna try to roll with a 1000. I think that buying an ac for a 5x5 will be a bit much and probably put me off budget. I guess maby i am looking at more like 1500 after ventilation.

hey no problem bro i knew what you were after and for some reason many people dont like to give these kinda responses but i feel good when i do because i know i just helped someone or at least gave them a honest opinion about vendors and products i've used that i got good prices and service from and they deserve my recommendation.

Yeah that was a great detailed reply. HaHa, yeah I'm lazy, sometimes I forget how someone new to this needs a more detailed explanation on things and how much it helps being able to see the actual product and where to find it. +rep

The other thing is that you won't really know how all this will work together until you get it up and running. If you add a/c then you have additional problems with odor escaping due to the compressor not being sealed, then with the a/c you will have a negative pressure issue because they suck out a lot of air (negative pressure is a good thing as long as you know where the air is coming from). Lots of little things you will need to work out, but hey that's the fun part!

Almost forgot here's a place to get good inexpensive carbon filters. FOOTHILL-FILTERS

Here's the in line fan I use on my 1000, it works great just be sure to mount any fan by hanging from bungee cords or it will vibrate and make noise like crazy.

the inline i listed is 45 more cfm and $40 cheaper. dude the one i listed is a STEAL i own one in 8" and have it as the only fan on 3 1k magnum xxxl hoods and the last one in the line isnt that warm. a booster would help but it's manageable heat for sure that fan kicks ass.

are you running a SCROG in this space?
do you have the ability for a exhaust and intake hole to exchange air or does this space need to be sealed?
if sealed you will probably need co2 to combat the temps it is reported plants react better to higher temps with higher concentrations of co2. if not CO2 you will probably need to add AC which is even harder in s 5ft sq space especially if you have a scrog going on wall to wall!

i'd mount the filter on the celing and then run it through the light and exhaust out the top or high up in the room and cut a equivalent sized hole to your fan size as low in the room as possible. this brings cooler air in and exchanges air and moves plants allowing for new air (with more co2) to be introduced into the growing environment. you can build light traps to stop the light from escaping so it dosnt look like the gateway to heaven from outside when looking at the intake and exhaust holes

No doubt that is a steal on that fan, I might pick one up for a backup. I was just trying to show what I have used and know to work. I thought that site looked familiar, that's where I ordered my OZN-1 Ozone Generator. Too bad they don't seem to carry it anymore.

Ok, this is going to sound stupid but I am going to be setting up a grow room in a garage. Going to build a room in a back corner. The fan (Valueline 6 Inch 435 CFM Centrifugal Inline Fan), is it placed in the exhaust line pulling heat out of the room or is it placed blowing on the light, not sure how it works before buying. I figured I would put exhausting going to attic. Thanks

Well ok but why hijack this thread, search or start your own....

You will find people that say both ways is the right way. I personally don't like my fan working in constant hot air, my logic. So I put my fan in the cool air intake, before my light in my extremely short system. It is more noisy but it's not too bad. Really i think if you want to do it right, as far as making the fan run best, you would put it right in the middle of the whole line. But really, if your system is under 10 feet long it probably dose not matter at all. Good luck JR
