4x4 tent 1000w, need opinions

I've got a 4x4x6.5ft tent, has 2 4",6",and 8" exhaust ports on it.

I've got an old 600w ballast and bulb, with a big 8" cooled reflector. For fans all I have at this point is a 4" HO can fan.


Basically what I need now is a carbon filter and another fan. But before I purchase those I need to decide which light I'm going to use. The sketchy old 600w hps ballast, or my brand new 1000w digital ballast. My only thought is 1000w might be a bit overkill for 4x4, meaning I'd need a bigger fan.

I'm just wondering what you guys out there are doing in your 4x4 tents.

How many cfm for your exhaust fan, pulling through the filter, to the light, and up through the attic, to keep a 4x4 tent at ambient temps with 1000w hps?

Should I buy a 6" 400cfm ish inline? Or an 8" 700cfm ish inline?

If you can cool the 1k watt then get it. I'd go with the 8" inline.

with the smaller fan u'll have to run it at a higher rpm to get the air out, which means more noise. the benefit of the larger fan is with a controller u can turn it down to make the noise less. personally if I can afford it id say go big. better to get a little more then u need then to outright have to buy another if its not enough

Which filter would work best with this fan, and a 1000w hps?

From experience I know that in a 4x4 with 1000w and no fan my temps went from 84F to 119F So Id rock the 8 inch unless you got a chiller or something you can fit in there also.

I've decided to go with the 8" fan, but I'm lost when it comes to deciding on a filter.

do you need a filter? meaning are you concerned with the smell? I was lucky and did not have to worry about containing the smell; so as far as filters go I don't have any advice for you. Good luck bro!

Also think about the noise cause some fans can be pretty noisy.

I'm not too too concerned with the noise, as I'll have a speed controller, and will suspend the fan with bungies in the attic. If it's still noisy I'll build a box to enclose the fan in and that should take care of any remaining noise.

I do need a filter however, as I have neighbours attached to me, within close proximity. I need a filter shipped within canada so I don't get dinged for customs fees and shipping costs. Or just a recommended size for a 4x4 tent. I'll probably grab a can filter locally at the hydro shop, I just don't know which one.

Get a Can-lite or Phresh filter. If you're getting that 737 Can fan from Amazon, it looks as if you're going to have to buy an 8" flange to go with it. You're going to have to drill that in yourself...

Anyway, you want to try and match the CFM of your inline duct fan as close as possible to the CFM rating of your filter, so if you get that 737 CFM fan, you'll want to buy a filter that's as close to 737 as possible. Also, if your buying an 8" fan, you want to also buy an 8" filter as well...
