400W MH/HPS, Cab 30"x42"x48", Good buds or cooked plants?

Hello all,

I am in the process of project #2, I am building a grow cab to fit an unused corner of space.

The cabs inside dimensions are 30" deep x 42" wide x 48" tall(the glass from the reflector will be at that 48"level). fully lined in mylar. The light I am thinking about is a 400W MH/HPS Gallaxy ballast and a Sun system Super sun II air cooled reflector running to a Vortex 449 CFM fan (on a variable speed rig) to a Carbon scrubber. MH for veg HPS for flower, I am just concerned about the heat generated by the light, I will set it up with a high temp shut off as well, but does this sound like a proper set up, or am I pushing my luck with a 400w?

The designers cab runs dule 250 watt fixture with one MH bulb and 1 HPS bulb and has no heat issues. I am just wondering which set up runs cooler, I would prefer the 400. The double spec 250 runs a couple degrees warmer than the room temp.

Any thoughts?

sounds like a good set up. The 400 should run cooler than the pair of 250's as that is 500 watts total and 2 ballasts instead of one. If you have the air cooled reflector you should be good to go. Just keep a watchful eye on your temps. Which should always be done.

I had similar issues with an older plant greenhouse. More ballasts generate more heat than a single larger ballast.

The fan will be outside the cab, duct to the reflector drawing fresh air from several fresh air intake ports at the bottom of the cabinet, all light tight, and allows the fan to flow unrestricted, so plenty of fresh air flowing through the cab and reflector.

Thanks Muni,

I was typing at the same time. Yeah I figured it may run cooler, the 2x 250 rig is pretty cool, one reflector and one ballast, one MH bulb and one HPS, seems like a good idea, but I want the 400W bud power.
Here's that 2x rig http://www.3rlighting.com/growlights/growlights5.html
