I have a 400w lumatek digital ballast thats about 6months old.. it runs @400w 18hrs a day, I went to feel the ballast, its extremely hot, couldn't hold my hand there for more then 5 seconds without it burning. I was wondering if this is normal or should I get it replaced.

I have it sitting on my dresser with nothing around it, sitting on the little rubber feet.

Magnetic ballasts can get scorching. My old 400w used to be the same, too hot to touch, it did just fine though for a year or two. If needed, google the make and model of your ballast with regard to overheating etc to see if there are any well known horror stories relating to your model.

I havent heard any horror stories. But I do know a Lumatek balllast should not get that hot. You can leave your hand on my 600s for as long as you like, yes when operating. I would exercise that warranty and get a new one. And I would unplug it right this moment to be on the safe side.

I'd say its unusal for them to be scorching hot, and that if you are worried about it in anyway you should take it back to the shop you purchased it from and ask them to test it for you side by side for 24hrs or so. It is essential electrical equipment function safely as the consequences of them not don't bear thinking about. Adjusta watts are about the coolest running ballast out there.....

I have the exact same 400w ballast and mine gets pretty hot as well. I do have a small fan running on it and my other ballast to help keep them cool.

to be on the safe side, I didn't want the thing to start a fire. So I took it in. and They gave me a new one.. I hope this one works out better!
