All mi lights are 400w, and I used 12ga wire between the ballast and reflector/bulb when I made my lights. I used it because thats what everyone told me was needed. I can feel your pain. It controlled my light position. I found some really supple 14 ga wire at HD, so I bought 20' and replaced the 12ga. I also have several that I used a 25' 16ga extention cord to separate. They work also.

tape the electrical line up the chain to the ceiling or better yet if you are ducting heat away then tape to the ducting. ballast lines are usually long enough to do this as they are made to put the ballast in a different room.
