Are you talking about how many fingers on each leaf?
If so its directly proportional to light intensity. You can make em jump from 3 to 9, keep em at 7, bring em to 13 etc. Though the limit is governed by genetics.
If it stays at 3 and even 5 the plant could stop producing, die, give lackluster yields and quality

also when a plant emerges from seed or is reverting from flower they often start with 1, then 3, then 5 and so on...
