250 Watt Sun system...big enough?

After doing some research I decided i want to join the "non cfl" lighting club for my babies. I know that a MH bulb for veg and a HPS bulb for flowering would be much better for my babies than 180 watts of clf power that i have now. My question is are 250 watts enough light coverage for my grow room. It's a cabinet that is about 54" tall and 38" wide. I have 8 plants right now all about 2 1/2 weeks old. I'll end up with less after sexing them. Is this system going to be enough for what i need? Am i going to have heat issues with it? Thanks guys!

How deep is the cab? I'd look for something with a remote ballast so you can keep it outside the cab to cut down on heat and allow you to run an air-cooled reflector if you need to lower temps. A 400w may work well if the cab has depth and you can cool it.

The cabinet is about 20 inches deep, if that helps at all. So do you think that I won't be able to keep the self-ballast unit cool enough?

I don't know anything about your current ventilation setup, so I couldn't tell you if it'll be cool enough or not. What I am saying is that you won't have any options for relocating the ballast and adding an air-cooled hood with a self-contained unit in the case it is too hot. If it were me, I'd cooltube a 400w in that space. Should work well.

can you show me what a cooltube is? I'm still new to the whole growing scene...learning everyday though! ;-)

Personally, I recommend the lumatek ballast package deal from cheaphydroponics.com. $300 includes ballast, cordset, bulb, and reflector of your choice. Pretty good deal on a digital ballast, I think.
