24/0 or 18/6?

Why do some people say 18/6 for veg while others say 24/0? Why not just 24/0 the entire veg for faster growth right?

I always took it as 24/0 if your using florescent lights and 18/6 if your using HID lighting. But I use 24/0 for the first week under florescent then switch to 18/6 under a MH bulb. Then switch to a HPS bulb for flower and it works great. I wouldn't leave the HID lights on 24hrs due to the temp of the ballast and I want everything to cool down.

Personally, I've never understood the attaction to 24 hour light. Plants need to sleep, too! :D I understand that for clones, 24 hours of muted lighting for the first week or so is ok. But I can't understand giving veg'in plants a lighting period that they will never get in nature.

IMO 18/6 (and later on, 12/12) is what nature intended for them, so why give them anything different?

I agree^^. 20/4 is also good but I wouldnt go any higher than that.

right ! and believe it or not your lights will last longer (hours wise) so the extra electrical cost is offset by the extended life of the lights.
Plants don't get "tired" and need to sleep.

yes but as i understood it in biology the plant needs dark to produce energy by the light taken in, in order to grow properly correct me if im wrong :weed: i used 24/0 and the plants grew like crap for weeks.

With indoor growing I always looked at it like your trying to mimic the outdoors, in most places it gets dark at night, so inside I wanted a dark period. I have tried both 18/6 and 24/0 through the veg cycle and got better results with the 18/6.

But get a couple grows under your belt and try both, you can't always go buy what people say, some things work some don't, you just have to find what best works for you with what you got.

I find if you use 24/0 your plants do not stretch as much. Then 24 hours of Darkness once your ready to switch over to Flower and your plants show sex faster in my experiences. I can understand 18/6 if your flowering and worried about temps.

I veg with T5s, and run them 20/4. Works well for me. I get stocky, well branched vigorous plants every time :weed:

am a few grows in and I have found that 24/0 veg light cycle (or lack there of) seem to benefit my situation. I really do notice much more rapid growth, and although my ballast is on all the time it can't possibly be getting any hotter then if on for 18 hours. Plus sometimes it has failed when starting up (it's old ass from a hospital). Also I live way up north and it's friggin cold, meaning my veg room needed heat when it was in the dark period, my heater is 1500 watts, I did the math and it was cheaper to heat the room with the light staying on then the 1500watt heater.

24/0 seems to work for me... i would think that since growth doesnt stop just because the lights are off that since there is no light the plants would do some stretching.. only makes sense...

I don't think the "savings" from of 18/6 is worth the time lost waiting for the plants to get ready to flower....
I run my 400mh constantly in my veg room... its like Denny's - we never close.

24/0 GETS MY PLANTS READY FOR FLOWER FASTER WITH SHORTER NODE DISTANCE
MY BITCHES WORK ALL DAY & ALL NIGHT BUILDING FRAMES FOR HEAVY FLOWERS

They can rest when they get into 12/12...

this philosophy was taught to me by my mentor, who's been commercially growing for 20+ years in NorCal

don't be scurred to work your bitches... you'll be surprised....

im sorta gonna high jack this thread for ONE question.. but i heard it isnt good to run HID's for 24 straight.. (i veg/flower under t5s due to the space i was using.. just ungraded to a bigger room)... anyways.. is that true??
