2' x 2.5' Closet Grow: Is 400 Watts too much?

Yo,

While the recommended growing area for this light system is 3'x3' to 5'x5', I was wondering if it would be safe for me to put in my 2'x2.5' closet. Other than having a fan running at all times in the closet, it will not have outstanding ventilation. I really don't wanna have to drop to the 250 watt level, but I also don't want to burn my apartment down. All help would be appreciated.

P.S. - Has anybody had any experience with that light system? Thoughts?

Much love

400w is slot for 5sqft...at that kind of light density youll need to supplement co2 to use all the light...if you go with 400 you will have to air cool the hood and have sufficient exhaust in place. Get a dimmable 400w ballast if youve got the extra few bucks for one. Then you have options if it dies get too hot.

400w is gonna be hot in that space.....hell a 250w will too....ventilation is the key to growing in a small space.....

it is a bit much in that area if it were me i would either make it bigger, or get a 250w. if you really want to stick with a 400, air cool it tie or scrog make max use of the area

If you can cool the light, it wont be an issue. The prob is finding a hood and 2 6" elbows that are less than 30" connected. It will be a tight fit, but if you ucan get fans pulling the air out of the light, you'l be good.

Thanks for all the input. Maybe if I leave the closet door open when the light is running, along with running some fans to direct the heat upward, the temperature could be controlled enough to allow for 400 watts.

That is the same growing area as im using and im running a 250w HPS. I have a 175 cfm blower on a fan controller and at low speed it hanging around 77deg with light on...in the middle of the night and outside it 47deg. im in a garage with a purpose built closet that has 4 in thick walls with insulation in them. Id i turn the blower up any more my humidity drops it already hadr to keep it in the 50% with a humidifier...the humidity is getting better because the plants are getting bigger...I would not go 400w in my space...more headache than needed...and summer is coming then heat will really be an issue for me

Check my journal out for more pics and video of my closet

The more light the better. More light = bigger faster growing plants with denser buds. More light also means you need more co2 since the plants will be sucking more co2 out of the air. For a small room like this I would recommend sealing up the room completely and running an co2 tank if you have the money for it. A small room like this wouldnt take to much to fill up, so a 20lb co2 tank will easily last you a week if your room is sealed and you are no exhausting any air. co2 20lb tanks cost about 20 dollar to fill so if you needed one once a week it would cost you 80 dollars a month to run co2 in your system. co2 produces higher yields if used correctly and eliminates the need to bring fresh air into the room. you will need to keep the temperatures down still so i would recommend an inline fan attached to an air cooled hood with your 400 hid lamp inside. you have a inline fan sucking air from outside the grow tent blowing it through ducting, through the hood, then out the hood ducting outside the grow room thus making the room still sealed since your taking air from outside to cool the lamp and blowing it outside as well exhausting the heat. Hope this helps.
