I do it the other way around (outdoor). The smaller bottom branches are usually splattered with soil from rain. Sometimes they have bugs on them. Unless they grow more than 4 inches, I'll chop em. At full harvest, I chop all of the branches leaving a 1 inch stem with a small bud growing from the main stalk to the secondary branch. Then I leave the stalk to grow some more. I keep watering it as usual. The small buds grow into big buds (and sometimes sprout new branches). This is what growers call "2nd generation" buds. If possible, (but rare) it can develop into 3rd generation and beyond. Only very strong healthy stalks can mature into 3rd generation and beyond.
