2 400 Watt Hps vs. 1 1,000 Watt Hps

grow cab size is 4' x 4' 6"... do you think 2 400's will cover the space better and i could get the lights close to the plants(110,000lumens)..or 1 1,000 watt hps(140,000 lumens)..obviously one would think hey its a no brainer go with the 1,000 watter, but with the distance you have to keep them away from the plants i'm thinking your losing lumens to the plants vs. the 400 watters...and there will be less heat...just wanted to know people's opinions on the situation... thanxs:bigjoint: p.s. grows will be blue cheese vegged to 10" to 12" tall in square 1 gallon pots...20 plants total harvesting 10 every 30 days... i have seperate veg cab..but i have no issues there just the flowering area..

Run the 1000 it will take a more powerful fan but if you can cool it good enough you can put it closer... :-) I just got a 1000 for my dr120 running and 6 inch inline fan to a filter...

I also went with a 1000 for my dr120. The 1000 is still more light! 2 400s would put of about 110k initial lumens and a thousand puts off about 140k. With the hood I use it is more than enough to cover the area and the walls reflect the light. I'm just not a fan of smaller lights unless your area is just too small for a larger light. some people say run 2 600 instead of a single 1000, if I was going to run two lights I would just get two 1000s. they both will need to be vented. More light is better. I'm pretty sure two 400s will get just as hot as a single thousand, are you going to run ducting for the lights? it all takes room and more lights is more ducting and more money.

here is a light chart for you. its measurements are in foot candles which is generally the same as lumens only lumens are units of measurements in square meters and foot candles are measured in square feet. now i run 6 400's with a 400 cfm fan with no rise in room temp's and keep my lights 2-4" from the tops with absolutely no burns (and the fan only comes on when room temps exceed 75 which is hardly) now this chart only gets as low as 4" and a 400 puts out 143'000 fc at that height and a 1000 at 6" (which in my opinion is cutting a 1000w close) is putting out 178'000 and its intensity obviously degrades the higher the light goes up. for one there is absolutely no way 2 400's will generate the same heat as a 1000 i can attest to that first hand (maybe three 400's) now IMO two lights are always better than one as you have less shady spots in your grow space i know al.b fuct gets some good results with 2 1000's in a basically 8x8 area but that is coming from a experienced grower with years of experience. i like lower wattage lights just my opinion and i think a 1000 is just a bit overkill in a 4x4 area shit al.b uses each 1000 over close to a 4x8 area lol 2 400's would be plenty sufficient.

I keep my 1000w 16 to 18 inches from the top of my plants with no burn! I can rest my hand on top of the hood and on the glass! I couldn't do that with my hydrofarm sunburst 400 (non remote ballast) and the temps are the same between my air cooled 1000 and my friends air cooled 400. So I can attest the the temp are going to be more about how they are vented. 1 1000w system should be cheaper than 2 400w systems, with a 1000 you don't have to make room for the extra hood and ducting to cool the lights and still fit a carbon filter. And it looks like drgreen agrees the 1000 would be better. he did say "2 400's would be plenty sufficient" and "i think a 1000 is just a bit overkill in a 4x4". over kill would be 2 1000w lights in a 4x4 tent. LoveHate, a plenty others and I have a 4x4 tent and can tell you that a 1000w is NOT overkill! I'm thinking of adding a 400 MH to the flower tent just because it is sitting around and they can always use the extra light!
