Hello fellow growers!

Thanks for visiting my grow journal. I’m a new grower and would certainly appreciate your insights, comments, and advice. I’m a bookworm and so all of my learning regarding growing has come primarily from books.

Enough book reading. Time to get my hands dirty.

Looking forward to conversing with you all and sharing information in the weeks and months to follow.

Day 1

Package arrived with my Green House Seeds: Indica E Mix. The seeds within the mixture are individually colored so as not to get them confused with one another.

The first thing on my agenda was to “pre-soak” my seeds. I have read that by pre-soaking the seeds it stimulates growth hormones within and helps determine which ones are viable and which are not. Apparently any seeds that are floating after 24 hours are considered non-viable.

Since I only have 5 seeds I don’t have the luxury of discarding any that may not float, but it certainly will be of note for practical monitoring purposes.

Oddly enough, within a minute of putting my seeds in water; all but one, (El Nino), went to the bottom.

Right off the bat I have two questions:

Are the seeds falling to the bottom because they are colored with some sort of dye?

Will the dye “wash off” making the seeds indiscernible?

I placed the glass on top of a heat mat which I have set for 75° Fahrenheit. I have them presently residing within the dark confines of my Secret Jardin DR60 grow room.

Now, I just have to wait for 24 hours and note what happens to my El Nino seed.

Afterward I will plant them in Rapid Rooter plugs.

Thanks for viewing my grow journal.

Float or sink is nonsense.I am sure the GHS dye is watersoluble.Me personly will just soak an hour and then plant directly in moist medium.

Good luck with your grow...I have been thinking of GHS Haze's.

Thanks Dalek and DeeTee. Was planning on Rapid Rooter plugs for germination. Afterward, growing in Fox Farm Ocean Forest.

As you can see all my seeds have finally hit rock bottom, which if the seeds were NOT color coated, would be a good thing. Unfortunately, since the seeds are color coated this leads to...

ERROR #1

In my previous post I asked two questions:

Are the seeds falling to the bottom because they are colored with some sort of dye?

Will the dye “wash off” making the seeds indiscernible?

Well, after doing some research I have found out that Green House Seed Co “Colored Seeds” should NOT be pre-soaked. In fact, they are supposed to be planted DIRECTLY into the medium they are to grow in. The reason being? The coating contains “root stimulators and anti-pathogen”. Also the article states that the coating will dissolve making the seeds unidentifiable.

Here is a link to the article:

http://www.420magazine.com/forums/seeds-clones-strains/79951-new-multi-colored-seeds-r-d-team-green-house-seed-company.html

Also, I have included an advertisement by Green House Seed Co introducing their "new" line of color seeds

So now I can sadly assume that by pre-soaking my seeds for 24 hours, I have now dissolved any beneficial qualities contained within the specific coating itself.

Interestingly enough, the coating didn't neccesarily dissolve as much as flake away.

What I did was individually fish the seeds out of their pre-soak bath, with a teaspoon. This resulted in the flaking away of their coating, which left the seeds in their birthday suits and naked as jaybirds.

Lesson learned: NO PRESOAKING OF SEEDS WITH COLORED COATINGS! I got it.

The good part was that the seeds DID keep their initial colors as you can see from the pictures above. It was only during fishing them out, that the coating began to break away.

So, I still have every seed/strain identified. WHEW!

This is because I had initially soaked and labled the Rapid Rooter plugs BEFORE fishing the seeds out.

Here is a picture of the Rapid Rooter plugs soaking in room temperature distilled water.

So basically all I had to do was essentially fish the seeds out individually and plant them within their respective seedling inserts.

Regarding Rapid Rooter Plugs, I bought the plugs/tray combination, but oddly enough there were no specific directions. As mentioned above, I let the plugs pre-soak in distilled water. Afterward, I planted the seeds roughly 1/4 inch deep within the plugs and placed the seedling inserts into the station tray with less than 1/4 inch of distilled water to prevent evaporation.

The station tray was placed atop the heating mat which is set to maintain a constant temperature of 75° Fahrenheit.

Thereafter, the dome was placed on the germination station and the seeds will be kept in darkness for the next few days until they begin to sprout.
