150 watt hps shop light.. HELP! /w pics

I got this 150 watt hps light, thing is it has a built in ballast and the whole unit gets hot as fuck.

all the wiring is under the reflector, and on the back of the box it says dont tilt over a 60 degree angle.

im worried about running it pointing straight down, cas heat rises (duh)
(im using a 4.6x4.6 tent)

Ya think this is going to be a hazard with the whole unit running so hot? and do ya think its safe running it pointing straight down when it will be heating up the components even more this way

to solve the heat problem either figure a why to extend your mogul base for the bulb out of the contraption by just cutting the wires and rewiring some extensions. Take out the reflector also and DIY a setup to make them work outside of the original case. Make sure to use proper procedures for rewiring so theres no potential fire hazard.

You could also just have a fan blowing directly at the ballast to keep it cool ( if it does the job), maybe also one between the hps and plants so it takes away all the hot air created by the light.

you should not have to worry about a fire hazard because the unit is built to handle that heat. if it wernt for that they would have built the ballast externally. the only thing this is going to do for your grow room is make it like an oven. what i did is cut 2 holes on either side of the housing, put exhaust tubing on it and put an inline fan to move some air. i used the housing as a reflector and heat shield but moved all the other parts to the outside of the case. check the link in my thread and later tonight when the light turns on ill post up some pics. there are some basic ones on there right now that should u the main idea that i did but ill get some pictures from below showing the inline fan.

Drilling a hole in the side and moving the wires to the outside of the light is probably a good idea..

Im only on week 2 of veg so i havnt hooked up my exhaust yet, im going to tomorrow and see what my room temp is going to be /w this new light..

I have a 400 watt hps lamp as well. i have a 4.6x4.6 tent. Im wondering if i should even bother with the 150 watt:spew:

I actually use 2 150w hps "security lights" similar to the one in your picture. I took the reflector and ceramic socket out and extended the wires to separate the bulb and the ballast. its working great so far. i'll try to get some pics of my setup for ya

take it apart it take it from there otherwise if you think its a hazard due to the cables well then go with your instincts and avoid using it, you rather be safe than sorry, you know sunsystem has 150 hps complete light setup for about 75-95 dollars, thats what im going to use for my grow. initial lummens is 16,000 so for for one or two plants should be perfect.

I was gonna use the 150 for right now while they are pretty small.

I dunno i think im just gonna hook up my 400 watt hps, i just didnt know if this was a good idea yet because my plants are so small (3-4 inches)

Ill keep it extra high for awhile then move it down a lil bit each day.

PROBLEM all i have for an exhaust is a bathroom exhaust (90cfm) it has duct connection for blowing air out, but it just pulls air from the bottom of the unit. So im just going to fix it so its right above my Sun system 400w hps

I dont have ANY extra money at all right now to invest in equipment, im barely able to pay this months bills.

So now im wondering if heat is going to be a issue.

Ill hook it up tomorrow and find out i guess.

since they are so small it wont hurt at all to use either the 150 or 4oo watts. you cant over do the light output on them.

as far as heat is concerned i have no clue. theres a few variables that are there and all you can do is try, and if it gets to hott stop using that bulb and wait untill you can afford some way to have better air flow

yeah I got my 150 HPS off ebay for 83 shipped to my door. They gave me a 10% off voucher for next purchase as well. You will like it as I have been really happy with mine!!

it will get hot very quick unless youi have cool air coming in and the hot going out then you should be fine but if you dont then go with something smaller if you have maybe a 250 hps? but if you dont then just make sure its cool for them 75-85 is good any higher than 99 is not good at all.with hid lights theres always heat issues, i used to have a 400w and it would get hot quick
