3 maybe 4 inches tops. as long as you can hold the back of your hand under where the plants top will be heightwise for like 30-60 seconds and it doesnt get uncomfortbley warm your good, if not start going down a 1/2 inch and retest until you find the right distance. .

I would assume a two week old plant is working on it's first set of leaves.
I use a 60 watt about a foot away. 500 lumens is plenty. Once it gets it's second or third set I lower a 100 watt to a couple inches away but by then the root system is large enough to absorb the moisture it needs. If you try it sooner, keep an eye on it. You can fry it pretty quick.

2 weeks old working on it first set? at 2 weeks mine are 6-8 inches tall with 4 or 5 nodes........your plants really take that long to get going?

lol a couple feet with a fluorescent light....anyone say stretch?
ditto on that LOL, what's wrong with you people, MJ is able to sprout and thrive in full summer sun, there is no reason on earth to to have a florescent light two feet away. Two inches is more like it.

Well yea, I start a seed in soil and in two weeks I got a seedling that is working on its second set of leaves. During this time it doesn't need much light. I's not like I haven't done this before. I use about a quarter the amount of nutrients that's recommended, never touched molasses and have grown in all three types of hydro, my six plants in soil last year net me over seven pounds of meds.

You wanna tell a noob to put his light on top of his seedling?
Shit, I don't care but don't imply I don't know what I am talking about.

Same here man my seedlings are just now 2 weeks old and second set of leaves are beginning. A 2 week old seedling with 4-5 nodes is like a fuckin super plant.

Just so we are clear, i never said anything making fun of you or implying you dont know what your doing at all, i was just saying at 2 weeks my plants are like 5-6 times bigger than yours are at 2 weeks. Might want to think about that, im not doing nothing amazing that you arent, im just keeping the lights 2-3 inches away compared to your foot or two away. How can you deny that people like me and frmboi and rollbluntz who keep our tubes and cfls 2-3 inches away and have plants that are 4-5 times the size of yours at 2 weeks have faster growth rates and take off alot faster? I respect your opinion on developing the root system first hypothesis of yours, but it doesnt seem to offer any actual benefits in my experiments, the plants that are too far just stretch and dont start rooting as well while ones that are under good lighting close to them develop big strong healthy root systems to go with their larger size earlier. Try it on your next grow if you dont believe me my friend......

We just cant be talking about the same thing.
Let me use pictures,

This is what I had in mind.
You are saying to put this 125 watt florescent grow light 2 inches above a 2 week old seedling?

I'll admit I do not own one of those lights. I use a sunblaze hood with four 24" t-5's in it.
Sometimes supplemental cfl's around the outside, depends on how far away the plants are spaced.

Here is 100 watts in the center and 13 watt cfls on the side with a fan in the center.
It's close to the same amount of wattage but spread out.

There, that's the way I do it but I wouldn't get that close without a fan.
You say I could get that close with one of those 125 W? I'm gonna have to get one and try it out.

you should have a fan on the plants tops and the light always, its important so you dont burn them. They need that airflow and cooler air being blown on them whisking away heat. I think your going to really like the results you see, because no offense but if your plants 2 weeks old and only working on its first set of leaves your doing something wrong, i dont want to say wrong but i cant think of any other way to phrase it so i gotta use it. you should start seeing alot faster growth if you get the lights closer. Also, You gotta pay attention somewhat to making sure you are raising the lights when needed to keep it from burning the plants because they grow too close to the light. I raise mine once maybe twice a day when growth really takes off, normally about 1/4 of an inch to an inch.
