1000watt light keeps cooking plants!

Hi,

I'm trying to grow with a 1000 watt Metal Halide/HPS light. I have one of those "hydro huts" set up outside with the light at the top of the tent. I'm growing in soil. Everything I tried to grow in there (even other things besides bud) hasn't grown.

When I dug up the soil, I noticed all the seeds I had planted (veggies, cannabis, etc.) the roots were shriveled and burnt up. It does get pretty hot in there from that 1000 watt light! I've tried setting up this bathroom fan with a duct leading out from the tent (which does blow some of the warmer air out) but apparently the light and tent is still way too hot (especially on top of the hut) for the plants. Also, there is no fan blowing fresh air into the tent from outside (which means the plants may also be suffocating a bit too). The fan I have is not connected directly to the light (since the fan is mounted to a separate fixture and cannot be taken out) Even with the bathroom fan and the regular fan from my room the hydro hut gets too hot and the plants get fried. How hot you ask? Hot enough to melt the cheap plastic pots I had, if they were placed close enough to the light.

Unfortunately, when the plants are further from the light (on the bottom/middle of the hydro hut where it's much cooler), the plants don't seem to grow either. The few plants that do grow all grow extremely slowly, frail, and spindly (like you could snap the plant in two just by touching it). I'm guessing they don't get enough light unless really close to the light itself.

How do I stop this 1000watt monster from getting too hot and deep frying my plants? Can anyone suggest a ventilation system that is easy to hook up, cheap to run and can be purchased inexpensively from Home Depot? The tent has holes for ventilation ducts on the top and bottom. Whatever I use needs to not only remove the hot air inside, but replace it wish cool, fresh air, from the outside.

you need to set up ducting right next to the bulb, sucking all that heat out... and it has to be a powerful fan, like an inline fan or something like that...

Your tent is black and its outside it itself is going to absorb heat from the sun. Try to bring it inside into a constant controlled temperature and humidity
the reason your plants might not be growing is the humidity could be to high and the plants are sitting in stale hot humid air
and obviously the heat is the main issue
venting is most important when dealing with HID and tents especially
you NEED a temperature gauge and should have a hygrometer
plants will definitely grow under a 1000 watt even up to like 6 feet away or something. The closer the better but there would still be usable light i believe so i dont think thats your problem
you will have stretched plants with more leaf stem than bud and your buds would be very light and fluffy if you kept your light more than a few feet away
I would say look into getting the hut inside in the ac get your humidity under 50 % getting oscillating fan to blow on plants get strong fan 170 cfm or more to vent air out and if possible vent your lights too you need to replace the air in the tent every few minutes the only way to do that is powerful inline fan dont mess with duct fans
