1000w in... a 2x3?

Hey guys, last night I purchased a 1000W HPS hood/ballast/bulb. I was looking for a 400w setup, but all of them were going for around 200+, so I quickly snatched up this entire lighting setup for $130.

First off I was wondering if the bulbs spectrum (2100k) is whats needed? I've been using cfl's and the ones I use to flower are 2700k so I'm wondering about the different in 600 kelvin.

But now I've been wondering... I'm growing in a closet which is just about exactly 2' x 3' x 9'. I'm gonna have the hood plenty high up with the hood being exhausted outdoors, and the closet being exhausted into my room. The only issue is I'm not sure if it's TOO much light? Is 140,000 lumens going to be too much for a 6 square foot area? Hoping to grow about 7-8 plants in there.

Is there anything I could do to make the light more effective as well? Or if its too much, perhaps make it less effective?

Thanks

I've seen a dude in high times using a 1000watt in a 3'X3' closet... its kinda overkill for the space but will be fine if you can keep your temps down... I would go sea of green in a space like that... Temps will be your biggest issue with a 1000watt in that small of a space...

Too much light is never a problem.... your plants will love it as long as you keep the heat down...
Keep in mind that a 1000watt light can be difficult to cool in a space 4x the size of yours... ideally a 250, 400, or 600watt would be used in that small of a space... but 1000watt could be done, it will just be harder to dial in your environment...
Let us know how it goes!

well i think ima have temps covered. in about a month or so it's gonna start being really cold around here, and I'll start flowering then. i'll have 12 hours of light on during the nights when it's coldest, maybe around 30-40 outdoors. I also have the 1000watter exhausting outdoors instead of out to the room. Hopefully thats enough to keep it working good.

And I was gonna try a Scrog on my next grow, however this is my first grow so I'm kinda going oldfashioned. Wanna try it the most regular way at first so I can learn. Just topped my plants a couple days ago as well

venting and circulation are the key
u should have spent an extra 40$ and got a cool tube.....and spent about another 80 for an exhaust fan
if u provide great medium and perfect nutes and great genetics u can yield a ton with that light
light equals bud.......(if all i mentioned above are there)
i would go with an aeroponic setup......

alright heres more on my situation. I got FFOF soil, and strains such as Trainwreck Wonder Woman White Castle Moby Dick etc.. all off of the attitude seedbank. Nutewise, I'm not doing to well.. I gave them a dose of Miracle grow (26-16-20) or something like that in their veg stage and I have some miracle grow bloom enhancer I was planning on using in the flowering stage. If it pays off greatly I can go ahead and get some fox farms nutes later on.

However.. I was wonderig how it would be best to exhaust all the hot air out of the glassed hood out my window? I'll go ahead and invest in a fan, I just have no idea what kind? Inline? Squirrel Cage? I have no idea what fans are good for what. How many cfms would it take to suck/push the air out of a hydrofarm hood through 11 feet of ducting and out my window? And since there are 2 duct openings in the hood, which one would I run the fan through?

And another question. How long should I veg my plants? How tall should I strive for? It's a 2x3 closet with about 9' vertical, and Ive got 6-8 plants that are gonna be in there. Should I try to get em bushy and short? or just go for vertical growth to maximize yield?

thanks for your help guys

what i would suggest is growing your plants normal and topping them a few times and then supercrop right before you flower...it will let you grow 6-8 plants decent size and make an even canopy

careful w/ that MG stuff, many here will slam it but it works OK if you dont overdo it.Personally,I have used it to veg w/ but prefer organics to flower as it improves the taste,IMHO.
the hood has 2 openings,1 to take air in the other to exhaust it out, either can be used to exhaust so pick the 1 that is easy to hook up to.
cant guess what size fan but if you get 1 too small and have heating issues, you can get cooler air outside & pipe it into the other opening

Keep these factors in mind... you are pretty confined except on the issue of height.. if you grow your plants really tall all of the lower growth will be choked out and die off leaving you with only the upper canopy receiving light. You could scrog 1 known female plant and do pretty well.. couple OZ's at minimum.. just make sure you let the screen fill in.. Otherwise I would think of doing vertical SOG... hang that 1000 watt vertical with no hood and put a bunch of small rooted clones on angled shelfs... more plants and more work.. but it will be something u might want to get into later on... there are tons of ideas... just find one and make it work for you.

Dear god man!!!! Thats a whole lot of light for that area. I would re-think my grow area if I were you. It will work, but I honestly think it is too much of a trial by fire for a new grower that will just give you headaches.

not necessarily... i jumped up to a 1000 for my second grow from floro tubes... didn't have a problem... only bigger buds... do a few dry runs with the light to check the temps stay where needed... put as much light as u can in that space!!

Well lets say theres a way I could get the plants about 5-6ft tall. would theyre be any way to direct the light from the top evenly throughout the closet so the bottom leaves get nearly equal lights as the top?

Nope... that is where the beauty of a scrog comes into play... flat even canopy, especially for such a small space..your 1000watt HPS is best if kept within 24" of the tops.. 5-6 foot tall monsters would need a better grow area than you have available right now..

it would be a waste of money/electricity to power a 2x3 room... i'd roll with CFLs in that space
Costs only $40 a month to run a 1000 watt HPS on 12/12...even if you have to go 10 weeks.. that is only $100 total in electrcity... trust me the quality of meds u will get from the HPS is well worth every penny
