if it has a dimmer switch , i would turn it off 1st then set to a lower setting,
if its a dial a watt , i would turn it off 1st then change the bulb,
and full power is ok for your young plants as long as they are not to close to the light

I change the output setting on my 400 watt Lumatek all the time while it is on, using the same 400 watt HPS bulb. That's what the switch is there for; you could run a lower wattage bulb on the lower watt settings, or the highest compatible wattage bulb (1000 in your case) on Super Lumens or any other setting. You just couldn't use an 800 watt bulb on 1000/SL, or a 750 watt bulb on 800/1000/SL or a 600 watt bulb on anything but 600.

But if you do unplug it to change the bulb or do anything else, remember to wait at least ten minutes before you plug it in again.

1. Yes lumateks can run a 1000w bulb at 750 and 600 watts... I wouldn't do it. You're just going to ruin the bulb. Lumateks are one of the few manufactures that has a ballast that can run a high wattage bulb at a lower frequency.

2. Lumateks can all run 750 and 600 watt bulbs. So maybe you want to buy one of those.

3. When switching wattage and obviously bulbs make sure to turn off your unit (and unplug it if changing the bulb) and then switch wattage.

4. From the looks of it I'm assuming you have the newest gen of lumatek ballast like myself.
