I got got a 1000 what hps system 2 years ago , came with the hood, bulb, cord, ballast, all that shit. Got home a week ago my light was out thought it was my bulb so I ordered a new one got it today put it in didn't work. Wtf? What do you guy think it could be? My ballast sounds like its on, it hums like my olady. Do the cords from the ballast to my bulb go bad? Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

not likely but cords can go bad.more likely is either the capacitor or ingnitor. first check the lampholder. unplug the ballast, unscrew the bulb, check to make sure you unplugged the ballast.if you can unplug the wire from the ballast to the light.if not check again to make sure you unplugged the ballast. at the bottom of the lampholder is a little metal tab that contacts the center post of the lamp, make sure it is bent up enough to contact the bulb when screwed in.
if you have a 1000 watt MH bulb, you can try that. if it works, your ingniter is shot. if you dont have a MH bulb, you could replace both cap & ingniter as each part should be 10-15 bucks. be careful of the cap, it will hold voltage even after the ballast is unplugged.

got a multimeter? you can check the cap fairly easy. discharge it by shorting the terminals together & unplug the wires. set your meter to ohms scale and touch leads to terminals. your resistance should start low and climb if good.
be careful of the cap! it will hold several hundred volts even when unplugged.
if the ballast hums when plugged in, it should be good & the cord from the outlet to ballast as well.

it hums when its pluged in, I do have a multimeter so when I get home I will try it. So if its not the cap then its the ignitor? Is there anyway to check that?
