1000 watt changing to 400 watt

Hello everybody, I have a 4x4x6/1/2 foot grow tent with 1 single switchable ballast 1000 watt bulb M.H. for Vegetive growth and H.P.S. for flowering. Light hood is air cooled 27 inches long by 15 inches wide. I was planning on growing legal medical personal 6-9 plants in 3 gallon pots. But something came up and I will be using the same set up except with 400 watt M.H. bulb for Vegative, and 400 watt H.P.S. for flowering. Should I now grow less plants considering that I will have less light output? In other words what is the maximum number of plants that I can grow to be finished at 2-4 feet tall.thanks CW.

Imo theres no "maximum" amount of plants(within reason), as long as you fill the canopy it should be good. for me any light that makes it to the floor is wasted. but with the 400 since it has less penetration i would go with more small plants rather then fewer bigger plants.

can you post a pic aswell, if it was mine i would go vertical with the 400w (in cooltube if possible) and get it inside the canopy and place the plants around it, i think this way it would maximize the lighting, this way also has the plants very close to the light :) which they tell me they love :)

something to consider is that with a 400w you get less penatration so having a tall plant might be conter productive..... Its not really about number of plants but how you grow your plants.......Since a 400w has less penatration instead of growing less plants the same size you could grow MORE plants in smaller pots and only grow them half the size.....A 400w will be better suited to a SOG grow because in a sog your only worried about the top cola of each plant and since your 400 wont penatrate as much as a 1000w its better to have a grow where your only concerned about the top canopy instead of the entire plant.......So i would do 16 2 gallon pots and only veg for like 2 weeks then go striaght to flower.... Or you could even do 32 plants in 1 gallon pots...... Or you could go the other way and do 4 plants in 5 gallon pots and vegg them for over a month eather way if you do it right they should yield the same remember is not about the number but what tech. you use to grow them......

I have done 9 plants in 3gallon pots under a 400w in a 4x4 space and i wasnt pleased with results compared to using that same room with a 600w or 1000w
