cook? maybe if the light is to close. im wondering if you'll vent it or what. plus are u growing a dworf or lowrider because the light takes up place and so does the pot to hold the plant. u might want a taller place. i don't think it will cook. but be careful don't want a fire or nothing. i would go with the cfl thats just how i roll. good luck my friend

You can get 70w HPS with ballast from LOWES for $35. It is only 85 lumens per watt but would work well with short LST plants. Maybe throw in a few 6500k swirlies on the sides to round out the spectrum. It is a good way to get started but those bulbs lose a lot of brightness after a few cycles.

Check out the Security Flood lights at lowes and home depot. they have 55-75watt hps setups. That's what he is talking about, they are in the Flood/Security light section.

do you think this bulb will fit standard sockets? it says it fits HPS fixtures.......what about your average CFL/INCDSNT socket?

It would depend on how tall you want to grow your plants. If you will be doing a SCROG a 100-watt HID light would be enough in come cases but if you want to grow plants that are not even half-tall a 100-watt HID light will not have enough penetration ... and CFL's will be even worse and you will have to string them all over at different levels to give your plants adequate light.

The $35 one is a 70w HPS Utilitech security light. I don't see it on their website but I saw some at the store about 12 months ago and they weren't on clearance or anything that was regular price.

Hopefully they are still stocking them it was the best price I saw anywhere.

eBay might have some deals that can match that. 150w HPS for $80 shipped already setup for horticulture. The security lights have to be modified to be practical and that might not be a good idea for those who are not electrically inclined.
