If you use the whole thing then yes i would mix it up in the 50 gallon drum. Just don't want a mixed solution sitting around too long.
If you use a dry nutrient i would dissolve it in a smaller container before putting it in the drum.
Like everyone is saying. Water to help loosen it up. I like to get it wet a few times over an hour or so. Then i get 2 tooth picks and spread the shell off the sprout. Just be very careful and do not to pull up on the sprout.
